To be honest, I could not live with the curtains or rug. To my eye there is a big disconnect with the gray sofa/walls. Lamplight might make things look better. An overhead light will not. I would use solid cream curtains and a rug that pulls the gray sofa together with the floor. Maybe you can find a rug with gray and turquoise.

Thanks for the advice, my wife went and bought these curtains today and put these up. I think the couch cushions and throw need to just go somewhere else. The rug is brand new and can’t be returned so we are trying to keep it. A huge issue is that our rod was custom built by previous owner so it isn’t a standard size so finding curtains are so hard.

We are just in midst of replacing stuff in our living room. We have new tables on order and then we will purchase lamps

You don't have to keep the rods the previous owners installed ... specially if they limit your curtain choices.

take down that huge rod, patch and paint, and use slender drapery rods w/finials.

get something like these rods (whatever color), just lose that 1994 thing!

the throw/pillows are competing too much. use solids on the pillows. pillows/throw in these colors

you said you're getting new tables which is great, because that was my next suggestion. what do the new ones look like? neutral and not reddish brown, I hope.

I would not do any table on the right end. too crowded.

I'd do something like this for the middle. and it would camouflage a good portion of the rug, making it less 'busy'.

I lied. Easier to change out the curtains.

Thanks for everyone’s help! Our coffee table is brand new so it won’t be going. We have two matching side tables that are rectangular being made. We are gonn switch out the curtains for a white/cream colour. Ditch the pillows and throw. The chair in the side is already going . We just need a solid colour chair to go in the corner.
