I have a canna sprout

last modified: 8 years ago

these were planted way too late..they were a gift last fall (thanks Christine!) but spring was difficult (illness in the family)..decided to try it anyway..there's 2 seeds per pot..I didn't do anything but plant them..I put bricks by them to keep the squirrels from knocking them over..saw the sprout today..I'll need advice on saving them for next year..I won't have a tuber would I?..just bring the pots in from the cold and when they're bigger next year plant them?..

Your welcome Ann, mine are only 10" high, we had a lousy start this Spring, I know mine will not flower this year and I'm wondering the same thing you are. I'm sure we will both have a learning experience with these seeds. Oh and by the way, mine came up all green, no purple leaf, I'll post a pic for you later.

Sweet, I'll have to go and check Walmart to see if they still have them . Here's mine and she has a new leaf, I did keep her off the ground til this week so nothing dined on it, something ruined one of my EE's, we win some and we loose some...

Second pic was back in April under the grow lights, she ought to be 2 + feet by now, maybe she'll bloom for Halloween LOL........

I think your canna looks great!..how many seeds did you plant?..I hate it when a plant gets damaged but I try not to stress about it..mine should be blooming by Valentine's day lol..

Holiday Canna's, wonder if we could put a patent on them LOL !! I started 6 seeds, 4 came up and then 2 died which let me with only the 2 healthy ones.

your best guess..how long will it be until mine are say 6 inches tall?..

I'd say a couple of weeks with sun & heat, mine gets 5 hours of direct sun and now that the heat is on that really speeds the growing.

that sounds good..cannas do grow faster than some things right?..I'll enjoy them even if they're not big..I'll post pics as they grow..

they're bigger!..the third pot still hasn't sprouted..but 2 out of 3's not bad..my husband is making 2 plant stands for these small pots from scrap wood..didn't cost a penny..they're sturdy but the squirrels could knock it over so I tied it to a post..the stands and the deck rails need to be stained..sigh
too bad these pots weren't planted in May..they would be pretty by now..

What a handy hubby you have, that stand is awesome and it will last for years. I like all your colorful pot's they look nice. Your canna's have put in a good root system so now they should take off. Love seeing your progress :>)

good morning!..you're so right that my husband is handy!..he does so many things well..his rock edging looked so good someone on the hosta forum called him an artisan..thank you for the compliment :-) my plan is to use the other stand across from this one with each one holding a set of pots..there's 10 pots-10 colors..then in front of the narrow stands bigger pots..I'll have a tropical jungle on the deck..some stone edging..

I put annuals in almost all of the small pots..just 2 green ones left..I moved the canna sprout from the non matching plastic terra cotta colored pot to the black pot where the seeds didn't sprout..dug the seeds out..they're firm..I'll save them for next year..the cordyline bugs me..the leaves are a pretty color but there's 2 stems and they're crooked..and it's bigger and will be a pain to have it sitting in my kitchen for the winter..

I need to learn how to post pics properly lol but you'll understand

not your fault lol..technology is not perfect!.. my cannas from seed are small but I'm proud to say I grew them from seeds..I liked my cordyline when it was smaller..pretty soon yours won't fit under the grow lights..happy gardening to you too Christine!

How long will it be before my cordyline is as big as yours?

Hi Anne, how's your canna coming along? Mine did have its first flower, but it's not red like it's momma was lol, it's a pretty shade of salmon, I took the shot from the door way as you can see my little feral buddy was right there and I didnt want to scare him away, he was waiting for breakfast, so here she is

your canna is so pretty!..the banana and coleus look really good too..my cannas from seed have grown but are still small..

ran out and took these pics..the biggest of the 2 is leaning and I see roots..squirrels?..grrr..will have to work on it..

Thanks Anne, they are in full sun for 7 hours, that makes a huge difference.

Love all your plants, dang squirrelly critters, maybe you should set up a feeder for them, just a thought

Christine..they get peanuts on a "table" (wrought iron from a neighbor's trash with a concrete paver on top - the wicker rotted & I removed it)..I'm thinking that it draws them near my plants..

oooooooh I really like the very dark leafed Cannas, like Tropicanna. I thought they grew from "bulbs" rather than from seeds. Also have a yen for Cordyline TI with the enchanting burgundy leaves. Would think Cannas and Cordyline would be lovely companion plants.

Diane..I grew this green one from a "bulb" that someone gave me..then started some seeds that christine (the one commenting above) gave me..I also think cannas and cordylines look nice together..

pics from today..not much bigger but alive..I carefully straightened both of them..I was surprised at how strong the roots were..

They look OK and they are growing, that in it's self is an accomplishment, the roots are very strong, I'm going to try my luck of growing my canna in my apartment this winter, it's getting to be to much work trying to dig them up and store them, I'm getting to old LOL

I've always wondered what to do with these when it gets cold..there's not much to dig and save Lol..I'll probably bring them in..at least they won't take up much space haha..
