Replace vinyl flooring and update fireplace.

The first thing I would do is replace the verticals.

I would start over. Paint the ceiling white, install dark wood floor, reupholster the couches in a cream suede/velvet. Paint walls light blue, reconfigure layout. Get rid of the stove. Houzz has been a fabulous way to really help me design and decorate a new room. I adore it. I would also make the investment and have a designer look at the room, you'd be surprised at what only 1 hr can do for you.

Replace floor with tile. Replace fan with cool chandelier. paint walls warm color. Big comfy white furniture and colorful rug.

get rid of fireplace or reconfigure it and trash the blinds

Huge living room. First have wood stove moved. Where do you live? If its warm, terrazzo, otherwise darkish wood. Paint the cieling. It seems like a fun project:)

oh yeah whats in that room over on the right where the lights coming in? Is it a kitchen. I'd like that wall down.

maybe add a large area rug with the same colours of your couch. Have a large framed print behind the couch If you don't want to remove the fireplace a lovely set of open shelving or a floor to ceiling bookcase next to it on the wall would look good. also have a large coffee table with nic nacs on top to add interest.

Aisha, you can also start with art as your focal point and then draw your color inspiraton from it. Based on the furniture you already have, these pieces may work in your room. Please don't len anyone convince you to paint the ceiling. It's the best part of the room so far, except for the size.. Do you use the fireplace? If so, maybe you could build one in to look like an AZ fireplace (stucco, bigger on the bottom, rounded. I'm sure you can find what I'm talking about in magazines.) Then you will need to choose a floor. I would go with a buff color tile 18 x 18 if you can find one you like. Then, new furniture that would group around the fireplace. Since the room is large, the furniture doesn't need to be too close. You could find a rounded sofa and a couple of chairs to start off with. Ideally, you draw the room to scale, draw in the furniture, then put floor plugs in where you need light. (behind the sofa would be good, Then you could do tables to either side of the sofa and still plug in things at the same outlet.) Tile floors call for large area fugs, so a couple of them would be good. The dining room table and chairs doesn't need to be stuffed in the corner. How about bringing it out into the center of the room nearer the sofas? Now to the color scheme. I wouldn't use white anywhere. The floor could be a mottled buff color. (Buff sandstone or a tile that looks like it), and the walls could be a little lighter than the floor. The rug under the dining table should be no smaller than 11 x 11 to accommodate the chairs. It should go with the other rug that is under the sofa and chairs (which would probably be 10 x 12 or 8 x 11, depending on space). I would use wood that is similar to the ceiling -- not too yellow, not too grey-- for the cocktail and lamp tables. Lamps could be a dk bronze color with buff shades.
When you find the rugs you like, which should have some colors, then you will choose a color from them for your sofa and chairs. A wonderful bronze chandelier over the table with perhaps buff shades. I can see a greyish blue in the room (maybe draperies), along with other AZ colors. Wonderfgul artwork and a couple of interesting large plants and you'll have a fabulous looking room. Ficus trees seem to grow well inside under all conditions and are pretty when they're large. Cheap too, I would think, In AZ. Put them in big colorful clay pots (maybe blue to match the draperies) I can see this room, and I really like it! Of couse, it you want to tear out the wall between the kitchen and the living room, then you would expand this idea. What's the kitchen like?

Leaving out comment about how to decorate the room, you need to get some things right first. Because your ceiling and floor are two different un-coordinating colors of wood, I would either paint the ceiling while or similar light color, or change the floor. I agree with others who suggest you remove the verticals. Others gave you some good ideas, so why be redundant. Definitely paint the walls a color, as an interior designer, I never suggest to leave walls white.

Hmm... lovely ceiling, so wouldn't touch that. New flooring and different window treatments would be a good start.
Grey stone or tiles would be lovely for the floor, quite large sized tiles, min. 18"x18"
Or a wood that has a very similar colour to your ceiling or is darker. Not with a pink undertone like the floor now has.

No home is complete without an area rug!

First, is there anyway you can change out the flooring? If not, start with considering using just one of the sofas and adding comfortable chairs. Purchase a patterned area rug. There are many beautiful geometric patterns available in a wide range of colors. The large stripped fabric on the sofa looks dated, so consider recovering that. Coordinate the new sofa fabric with the chair fabric choices. Choose a neutral color for the wall paint. Think about simple window treatments something like wood blinds or roman shades. Not sure about the fireplace. If you like it, keep it. Clean the stone or it could be painted. Don't forget to think about lighting for the room. Just a few things to consider.
