Image, please?

A branch that is attached to the trunk is a 'first order' branch. A branch attached to a first order branch is a second order branch ...... and so on. It's very easy to force a new order of branching. All you need to do is truncate the branch by removing the growing tip. When you do this, the branch you truncated will never be able to extend again; but, the new order of branches that grow off that branch will be able to extend. While forcing your tree to branch is easy, it may not be the best strategy, which is why I asked for an image.
