These are shown with a background color. Is this just for display? Are these curtains sheer?

    You are correct. The darkened background is just for display to highlight the lace detail. We refer to the curtains as semi-sheer since the outline of pattern does blur the visual either from inside to outside or outside to inside. Thank you.

    No, the curtain panel is white ("grids") and sheer fabric connecting the "grids".
