Major Mistake!

Hello,
So we just moved to a new house and in our excitement ended up ordering a bunch of furniture etc. we ordered from a overpriced shop selling Italian stuff and now that it has arrived I am not liking it at all. They refuse to accommodate us saying it was a special order :(
Can someone please suggest how I can make this area look better.. everything seems to be clashing. I wanted a stylish contemporary formal living space and now have no idea what to do :(

I love the sofa! What don’t you like about it? Will there be other pieces coming?

Haven’t ordered more stuff. I have blue dining chairs on the side and wondering if there is too much color and too much color clash

Do you have other rooms to put stuff in? Maybe the rug could go in a bedroom? The mirror in the dining room?

I like the sofa, and the console table and think they look great together...

All is good…center the rug, measuring off from the walls and glass doors. While you are at it, center the sofa on the wall, too.

Art choices are personal, but if you love it I suggest having it reframed…as is, it is too traditional looking and not large enough. Or, from greatbigcanvas.com consider TWO canvases, hung side by side and framed in black and silver, (Modigliani).

Kind of the Italian version of:

Move the console under that art and the mirror ( the shapes mimic the rug) over the sofa and the funky glass table in front of the sofa.

Now you need two fab floor lamps for either side of sofa. Like these…love..

Looks good. Give yourself time to adjust. Figure out what's bothering you-maybe you'll find in a few days, nothing much bothers you actually, maybe you'll think it's a rug, maybe you'll rethink the pillows, maybe it's just the fact that you don't see the full picture yet. But enjoy the unfinishedness for now, go slowly with other purchases, and try not to go with one store only even if you absolutely love it. Vary your sources. Takes time but makes the process more fun.

It's a beautiful place, and I love your art.

Good advice from other posters - especially JudyG Designs. I really like the sofa. Like the rug, too.

I think that sofa is to-die-for gorgeous! I agree with jenwen, don't feel like the sofa has to be backed up to a wall. Try it out in different spots, and scoot it up onto the rug more. Personally I might add a few wood touches to warm it up but I don't know what your personal style is. Have you put together any ideabooks of rooms you like that would help us get to know your style?

Will you show us the blue dining chairs?

Things look good...and very Italian ;). Put some (white) simple coffee tables on the rug to calm it down.

Are you kidding? I love that sofa and rug, and that mirror wall sculpture goes too. This style is different than what I’d buy (for my 1940s bungalow, lol) but it has a real verve. It might be more color than you are used to. Can you take a break and settle into your house and resume decorating later?

It's all quite lovely but needs other stuff to pull it all together.

I reliably hate everything I've selected once I get it home for at least the first week :-)

    Beautiful space.

I like all your furniture & color pallet choices.

The pattern of the rug is great artwork, but personally it feels too busy to be a rug. It's keeping the eyes grounded away from your beautiful space & furniture.

I rather have that pattern on a wall.

Maybe it will blend in more when you add more. Maybe a white shag fur over the rug with a coffee table on top of.

Your house can look smashing. Everything you have is great, you just have to rearrange and ad a few more pieces.

Take all away except the couch, and center the rug. Set the sofa in place, don't jam it against the wall.

Get a low!!! table, a generous one

get a large piece of art

    need a couple chairs.....
    lamps.....

It's not a room until you make it one: )

Attaching some more pictures of the house! All of you guys have been phenomenal. I was having a mini panic attack and feel better now

Can you guys please share some pictures of how the sofa should be. I centered the rug but don’t quite understand how forward the sofa should be.

Love the deep rich blue navy furniture! Gorgeous!

You would probably benefit by finding a designer to help you with furniture placement - accessories etc.. You could get someone to work by the hour. It can even be done over the internet but I do think it more helpful for someone to actually be in the space - after my condo was gutted, my designer sat in there for awhile so she could reflect on the space :-)

The designer could also work on a hourly rate and then a markup if you buy stuff through her/him. Often the price with markup is less the comparable retail plus they have sources that are better than you might possibly find.

Maybe the rug in the dining area?...cost nothing to try.

I feel as if it takes away from the gorgeous sofa in the living room.

That’s not a bad idea, I could even move it to my room. What kind of rug would you suggest here? What do you think will complement the sofa? Also any suggestion on chairs that might go with it?

I actually love the sofa with the rug (though that is based on what I see on my not-great-with-colors monitor).

I agree with previous posters. There's nothing wrong with what you've chosen, it just needs to get all tied together. Given your state of "oh no, I've made a horrible mistake", I agree hiring a designer could help to turn your choices into a cohesive design. Not that you couldn't do it on your own, but a good designer will be able to help with analysis paralysis.

If you move the rug elsewhere.

A more subtle pattern rug will help keep more focus on your gorgeous furniture and the whole space as a whole.

Here's a few photos to help explain. I'm not necessarily suggesting any of these rugs in particular, just showing how the rug is a subtle display that becomes the backdrop of the other focal points in the room.

    Following! I like everything too!

I, too, think you should try the rug in the dining room. It's very bold and bossy, so you may be happier if part of it were covered with your table. I think it would look great there.

I also would try the two wood backed chairs with the other sofa (if you move the rug to the dining room. They are gorgeous but think they might look better in a more formal space.

Your home is beautiful, the things you've purchased are all beautiful, too. You just need to take your time now and find things to fill in and complete it. Don't be in a rush.

The room is large and you're not working around a television. Center this (or, another) rug with the patio doors then put the sofa completely on the rug with its back to the patio. All four feet of the sofa should be touching rug. Leave a 4' walkway behind it.

Put a cool buffet or hutch to use as a bar on the wall where the sofa was. Hang the mirrored art above it.

Get two chairs in white leather across from the sofa.

A generous low coffee table like Jan mentioned.

You have an innate sense of design and style. So now you need to build your room. Next you buy a pair of chairs just to get started. Ask us to find them and give some direction of what you can visualize in your mind's eye. This can be lots of fun for you and it's a great opportunity for you to get a better sense of your style. Onward gal!

Sofa looks great but I would change the rug. Just personal style maybe but I’m longing for something softer against that velvety sofa.

I like the sofa and the rug together. It does not look like everybody else's house here. That is a good thing. It is bold and colorful. Your house has lovely architectural features and proportions. If you get help, make sure it is from someone who appreciates European design.

I really like the sofa with the rug, I wouldn't move it to the dining room. At least not yet.

I just saw Rita's comment. She is right. This is European style and taste .
