If the plant is firm in the final pot leave it in that pot. But if you can remove some of the plastic on the top edge to where the potting material begins. It could be placed in another pot, I'd suggest terra cotta. At least a 5"pot or maybe 6". Arrange it so the new pot is filled to the top with medium and the little pot has the plant on the same level as the new potting material. This plant in the wild likes to grow on trees and is generally mounted not potted. Mounting should be considered. Mounted plants need water every day. I could be potted if you can't water daily. In a pot it would need low water retention to mimic mounting.

it is not firm in the pot but the roots are growing through the slats so I'd have to cut the net pot to get the plant out without harming the roots. I would love to mount it but I have noone to cover the watering for me when I'm away so I'd rather pot it up. Any clue as to light requirements? Cattleya light okay for a mini? Should I let dry in between waterings? Is there a dry period, etc.?

Morning sun and bright shade from there. It you pot in clay with lava rock and water every other day it should work. On especially hot days, every day. They need to dry after watering so no saucers below and it needs to be an orchid pot with holes on the side and bottom.
