Our sales were early this year (around Memorial Day), before the high heat of Summer. There probably will not be much of anything until the Autumn (October).

I did pick up a five foot, Magnolia virginian for half price ($23.00) at HD.

The pieris is tall (10-12', more in my climate) but somewhat narrow.

No clearances other than annuals here....and that is a progressive clearance at my local nursery. But nursery offered shrubs, trees and perennials seldom ever go on sale. Ever!

I tend not to shop much at the box stores as their plant selection is dismal. Only the most basic or common of plants and by the time they are on clearance, they look like crap and not worth spending a nickle on!!

Shrubs are my main interest also. So far my clearance buys are Hydrangeas, both bloomstruck and bobos, pink almond tree, and Golden Globe arborvitaes,

I did find a clematis, delphiniums and hakone ‘all gold’ grass for prices I couldn’t resist....

I just picked up Black and Blue Salvia for $2. Sadly it's been so hot I've had to water several times each day to keep them from drooping. Hope I can keep them alive. They're marginal perennials here and I will try to keep through the winter.

I love the Lowe’s sale racks. I got two red Mandevillas last week for a dollar each and a red Drift rose for $3. All very healthy and blooming happily.

Picked up a few more hydrangeas today....my new love. With this heatwave they have tons on clearance.

Yes! They seriously have the best plants for a big box store. I'm on the lookout for an oakleaf hydrangea, but I kind of hope I DON'T find one... because my plans for it mean I'm starting to plant/tame a new area and do I really want to get into that this year? MORE shrubs to plant and water? Hmmmmmm the tough choices in life...

I picked up a really sad ( worse than I usually am willing to purchase) Strawberry Sundae hydrangea and 2 slightly crispy physocarpus Amber jubilee at lowes last week because I needed them to finish an area. Good deals at lowes. Manager said the people that water only come in once a week! Makes me cringe, but getting good deals because of it lol. Have to go back today.

But yes, the problem of keeping them alive until fall is the downside. I ended up putting the physocarpus in a kiddy pool and I swear they grew 6” since last week;) Not one has even wilted since. I wish I could stick all my pots in a pool haha.

Stopped by my local HD yesterday.........the only thing on sale were some pitiful looking fruit trees at 50% off. Otherwise, everything else was at full price, including 6-pak annuals!! And they were selling fortnight lily, Dietes bicolor, with the perennials even though it is not reliably hardy for this area.

Almost end of half-price sale at our local Terra Greenhouses.

Having to replant an area with increasing shade conditions; great sale for things like ferns and hostas. At this stage I particularly like Japanese painted ferns (in part for their relative compactness). Got three var. Pictum. Few other additional acquisitions included a dwarf peony ('Dancing Butterflies'). Finding the smaller peonies easier to maintain than taller ones. Still, blooming in June here, they're no good at the back of our borders.

Went to another location, with lots of different sale-plants left. The perennials were largely sorted by type. Very distinctively, the garden phlox section was white with powdery mildew, but didn't notice powdery mildew anywhere else along the racks. Very happy to have purchased some 'Delilah' and Younique Red there several months ago.

Found an Itea ‘little Henry’ today...I was thrilled as this is a fall favourite...it has such rich beautiful color. Even more thrilled as it had 2 nice sized suckers at the edges of the pot. So I was able to divide it and get 3 little Henry’s...for $12!

Now my shrub buying frenzy MUST end. I originally wanted just a ‘few’ more to complete my beds.

Well I just counted up the shrubs I’ve purchased this season, and oooops...my ‘few’ turned into 33 (omg they add up fast). 14 of them being hydrangeas.

A good amount were on sale, so that makes me feel better, knowing I really did save a lot ;0)

So that’s it for me, no more clearance racks! As hard as it will be to resist stopping in at lowes...I must have will power...I must.

I'll be heading to Lowes on my lunch hour - I've been checking weekly and they have not clearanced out anything yet! My HD was the same way - both still selling annuals at full price. I have no idea why. I did get some good deals on fruit trees at half off at WM weeks ago.

Maybe it's my lower zone, I've had limited success at overwintering sale purchases...it seems they have a better chance when I plant in early summer and they have a whole season to establish themselves. However, I do look forward to the clearance on soil and amendments in late August.

Donna I have had good success at buying summer clearance plants but not so much if I wait till the end of summer, early fall. Learned that lesson after buying quite a few from my favorite nursery only to have most of them fail to reappear the next spring.

I did get some good compost buys one year - I need to remember to look for those as well.

Wow Share that is hard to believe! Did you look for clearance racks? At my lowes they are located at the back...behind all the nice looking plants lol.

HD doesn’t clearance their plants out until the very end of the season...when they should have been tossed long before. I don’t shop there for plants..lousy selection in my opinion.

Shaw's Supermarket had bark mulch on clearance for 99 cents a bag. Not all stores have a big stock of garden things.

Loews in Concord NH didn't have much worthwhile on sale but trees and shrubs were 50% off at Concord Home Depot and most looked in great shape. A lot of butterfly bushes but they weren't labeled well. Tag has a photo of pink but the ones budding out are blue. I tried not to be tempted. Just bought a large pot of Thai basil in great shape for $4.

I'm waiting until September-ish to hit up the local nurseries for stuff -- that's usually when the sales start, especially shrubs. Still have (2) beds to cut out and borders to widen, so even if I got some super deals right now, it'd be another layer of work to tend them.

Ocean State Job Lots is doing clearance. I find that inventory at the various stores to be erratic. Concord NH was cleaned out weeks ago but a couple of weeks ago there was still a decent selection at Hooksett. You might be able to find bone meal on clearance. Even at their regular prices, their ceramic, plastic and terra cotta pots are reasonable but now 40% off. But for anyone over 65, the senior citizen discount in the spring 25% off, was a great time to get fertilizers (they have the Epsoma brand) and other garden stuff. Might not be much left at this point. Market Basket in Warner NH already has potted mums out for $4.99.

The local garden center had a 50% off sale and I had a gift card. The inventory of perennials was dwindling, but I ended up with 3 Clethra 'Ruby spice' shrubs, and 4 Andropogon "Red October" plants- all big and blooming. Now comes the fun part of holding the grass over winter and pushing my imagination to find a good place for the Clethra and 50 other plants sitting in containers on my deck.

Went into Lowes because I happened to be passing one and thought I should look into their clearance or else I would regret it. Not much available, unfortunately. BUT, I did see a heavily discounted 'Miss Saori' Hydrangea. Now, I don't have any hydrangeas except the climbing ones, so I really don't have any experience. Was marked down to $8 from $32, so I thought I might give it a try. It doesn't look great, but I know that means nothing if I get it in the ground. Also said full sun, but I'm thinking it may actually do better in the partial shade spot I am imaging. This will be a bit of an experiment!

Yes, ignore that 'full sun' thing :-) All macs would prefer some shade.....ideally morning sun and afternoon shade.

Grief - there are never clearance sales in UK nurseries...unless plants are actually at death's door...and even then, they are never great bargains. Possible to find a few dismal perennials in tiny little pots and a rubbish potting mix... 3 liatris at £1 each and a coreopsis, but nothing to get excited about. Dunno why I looked on this thread - it only makes me jealous.

LOL - I’ve become accustomed to looking forward to at least 50% off, and feel much better when it’s 75%. One year I really scored when the Japanese maples went down to 90% off, which was really kind of crazy actually. That’s how I ended up with 14 in my garden at my peak.

This year I scored with my elephant ear obsession. One of the nurseries I frequent does a thing in early July over 3 weeks: first week 40%, second week 50% off, third 60%. Surprise, this year they had full grown and huge rare varieties. Praise be to whoever their buyer is! So I loaded up with many, many plants, and I’ve been propagating like nobody’s business, since anyone who does elephant ears knows they don’t take off, at least in my zone, until the consistent hot starts - which is right around the time of that sale. Score!

I promised myself I would not buy anything else until I have a new shrub/perennial area ready. It's partially planted and the unplanted section is all weeds. I didn't put down a tarp earlier in the summer like I planned to. Scenic Nursery in Raymond NH is small but nice and I saw they have 50% off now. My local nursery hasn't done a sale like last year. Doesn't seem to be many sales like last year. I'm busy now until after 9/9 and have lost my gardening mojo.

LIke Camp's situation, no clearance sales here!! A local nursery offers a progressive sale on annuals or bedding plants and hanging baskets in August but that's just to clear the tables for the fall offerings of mums, asters, pansies and violas and ornamental cabbages.

But perennials, hardy vines and groundcovers or any woody plants never go on sale. Well.....I shouldn't say never :-) Some area nurseries do have fall planting sales. But this is fresh, new stock (limited to BLE shrubs and a few perennials) brought in specifically for the sale and the discounts are not huge - nothing close to clearance prices!!

LaLennoxa, Japanese maples never go on sale here!! I can't imagine them going on sale at 90% off........I probably would have bought 14 as well!!

This is just the practice at local nurseries and independent garden centers. Box stores here just can't compete with area nurseries and they only offer the very basic stuff. And while I don't shop them frequently - they have nothing I want - I have never seen them to offer 'end of season' clearance sales either. Maybe because there really isn't an 'end of season' here :-)

Anything not sold just gets potted up and sold for twice as much next year - no problem with leaving hardy stock out all winter in the UK so we never get bargains apart from a few manky bedding plants. Enraging really, since autumn is my main buying and planting season. I buy maybe one or 2 plants a year which are already in bloom...and only if I can't help myself because it is something special.

small local nursery announced 50% off trees, shrubs and perennials this weekend. Guess who doesn't have a planting area ready and busy both days. Earlier in the year I started fantasizing about making a fruit tree guild focusing on a pear tree (another nursery has a 3 in 1 pear tree) and other fruiting plants. But, a neighbor has lost all his pears and peaches to this year's thieving furry varmints. I think I have Sat afternoon time for a look see.
