What should I do with this dining table?

Have a Room & Board Portica counter table. There are only 2 of us, so the table is a perfect size.

Here's the dilemma: I am tired of this being a "counter/bar" table with the extra height. I dislike the stools without backs, I want a dining area where I can sit comfortably and also work. I hate the glass top because everything clanks.

Option 1 (save $): swap out the high base with a lower one from Room& Board. Swap out the bar stools for regular chairs. Keep the glass top, use placemats or something (?) to dull the sound of the glass.

2. Get an entirely new dining set (significantly more money)

Sell it since there is nothing you like about it and tweaking won't change anything except the height.

You would need a new base and new chairs - at that point, it couldn't be significantly more expensive to just find a small set that works.

I would be getting new chairs regardless, so that cost becomes irrelevant. A new base is only a few hundred dollars depending on material ($200-$400), versus a new table being more like $1000.

When working with a modest budget, I have had good luck at the "clearance center" of furniture stores. I got a solid wood kitchen table and 2 chairs for $250, what I use as a TV console for $200, etc. These are usually floor models; some times they have a scratch (which can usually be fixed with one of the stain "pens"). I try not to go with preconceived notions about what I want. The "TV console" was really a very low bedroom dresser.

Is it worth $600 to keep a top you don’t like. I don’t know what your styke is but dining room tables are regularly discounted or buy a used one.

A good table will last 20 years or more. Paying an extra $600 for something you really like seems like a bargain, spread over those 20 years. And, as others have said, you can find great deals at floor stock sales. I wouldn't sink another dime into a table I didn't like.

Check out the consignment shops, Fakebook resale sites, and Craigslist for something new to you. And for an idea of what you might be able to sell yours for.

Thanks everyone, I will get a new table. Although I have other furnishing I'd like to spend on, I will probably make the table more of an investment piece, given that it needs to functional bc I'm using it everyday.

Also.. I welcome any suggestions for tables. I tend towards a minimalist, contemporary, modern design. I like the idea of a white quartz composite table but I'm reading that some of the room& board quality might be iffy. Any thoughts?

These are pricey but perhaps you can find less expensive versions that are inspired by. I am getting my dining room chairs from them.

I like the table, but I've heard truly meh things about West Elm furniture. @groveraxle?

Craig's List it and use any $$ you get toward what you really want.

Notnyc, I have not actually purchased furniture from West Elm and their prices tell me it's probably not the best quality, but it is darn good looking, so it depends on how hard you are on furniture and how long you want it to last. (BTW, don't consider price as necessarily an indicator of quality. Don't even get me started on my expensive RH dining table...)
