HVAC Return Vent Temperature

We have a return vent that's when you open it to change the air filter shoes an aluminum bracket that holds some sort of sensor and 2 wires connected to it. It's the size of a quarter which I believe is a thermometer that measures the return air. So or question is, if this fails, where do I find the part to change it?

That's a bi-metal thermostat. They're not so much a sensor as a control that's either on or off. Typically used as an overheat protector or to control the drum/air temperature on a dryer and such. The button on back where the wires are connected may be a manual reset for when it trips (some are auto-reset when they cool, some are manual reset). I'm not an HVAC system expert but seems odd that such a device would be in the return airflow.

One of the set of numbers stamped on the metal edge is usually a code for the trip-temperature (and auto-reset differential). Do you have a camera that can get a readable closeup of them?

thanks...I tried taking better photos without totally removing it... looks like 60715, 8808, and 330598.... not sure if this makes any sense.. but from all of the responses, it looks like it's my thermostat that's possibly starting to give out and not this part... am I correct?

    What’s wrong with your thermostat?

The thermostat is reading (Photo 1)78-79, but feels like 77F so the AC is running constantly. My work around (Photo 2) is calibrating (-1F) it to where the digital readout would show (Photo 3) 77F so it doesn't run all the time. Concerned that it may be on its last leg as it is 16yrs old. Thanks.

What temperature do you want the room to be? Do you have a temperature gauge to verify the temperature? You can buy an inexpensive one on Amazon that measures temperature and humidity.

It is possible the thermostat is failing. When was the last time the heat pump was serviced? The color of the wires does not matter as long as they are connected to the correct terminals.

I have a room thermometer and it reads 75F...reading at return is at 74... just want the temp to be at 77 or 78F
