OLLD 7/2

Good morning all! I'm back but I don't know for how long. Pattyann, you suggested we start the computer in safe mode, so the hubby did that last night and then ran a full virus scan which we had already done twice, but two viruses were detected in safe mode that weren't found in regular mode!!! Thank you so much for that suggestion! So today will be a trial run to see if those were the viruses that shut everything down. I hope so, this is a fairly new computer and it's paid for, I don't want to pay even more to have a pro clean it.

Yesterday temps hit 105 and even tho it was stifling, I think I'm getting used to it as much as a person possibly could. Long day yesterday without the computer and too much heat to do much housework. I'm still fighting with the home warranty people over the A/C unit because I'm not sitting on an extra $7,000 to replace it myself.

    Night ladies, talk tomorrow
Mo, I commented on your ceiling and somehow it became a new thing for people to comment on. I don't know what I did and if I can undo it. I'll try...
Ok, it just made a new photo question, it didn't take over your ideabook, whew!
    Jayme-that's funny. Lawd a mercy
LOL, Jayme! I think the worst of it is over now.... might be another cell rolling through in an hour or so, but they've ended the tornado warnings for south of the city. Weather is amazing... how it can go from a perfectly blue sky to crazy clouds, rain, wind and hail in a matter of hours...

Going to tuck myself in now, sweet and safe dreams to all of my OLLDs until tomorrow... xoxo
  • 12 years ago
Goodnight Ladies..Sweetest of dreams & may all of your most lovely wishes come true....Dismey Dreams to u...xoxoxo

Hi everyone, those of you not making the zzzzz's of course, I am a little late today.

Calling Ez - are you still around? Can you come over to this thread, I am concerned this little girl's room is being taken over and not in her bests interests colourwise. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/what-style-is-this-dresser-dsvw-vd~537423

    Slowing catching up here

Bobbi ............ you know my attention span - I have absolutely no idea now what your dining chairs looked like. I do remember discussing them but that is as far as things go. You know the old joke about it being safe to tell old friends secrets because they don't remember anything??? I think I am entering that phase of life.

Mo - love your ceiling but especially love the chandy with it, the matte finish on it looks a million dollars and has so much more impact. How long before the rest of the room is done?

LAdd has popcorn ceilings and can't wait to get rid of them. She took them out of the living room when she did it up and was hoping to have had the bedrooms done while she was here to avoid having to handle the mess + kids. Ran out of time to organise it but with the heat they are having she was glad she hadn't put their little man to work on it, probably would have killed him.

You are all doing a great job with your gardens, they are looking amazing. I don't think we have half the plants you do, but many of them are the type I would like.

Five very excited children just arrived back from the zoo dragging two exhausted mothers in tow. Glad Nanna didn't go, she would have been on a stretcher. They have all gone to DDs now till Sunday .......... I can HEAR the silence.

I have a theory, if all these climate change predictions are right, that as our summers are getting hotter so we are hitting up the air cons which is chewing up energy and spewing out more pollution - in fact the exhaust from air cons usually heats the air more too. So with all the pollution caused by trying to cool our homes we are actually heating the outside air more, hence the reason we are getting fiercer and fiercer storms. It is all connected. This is one reason I won't put air con in, making do with ceiling fans, shading windows and keeping the heat out of the house. On the really bad days, of which we only get 4 or 5 a year and rarely consecutive days, I just plan my life around it to do as little as possible and stay as cool as I can.

These really hot days have happened in the past, as much as 100 years ago even, and when you think about it people did survive them and women wore corsets, long dresses and long sleeves, cooked over open fires, hand washed in water heated in a copper - we really have become softies, and totally spoiled ones at that. I wonder what would happen if we all toughened up, lived our lives more simpler would we see the earth cool down more and all these storms settle????
It definately would be a good start, not just for the climate, but for the stamina of humanity! [giggles]

There are plenty of researches on how to keep heat outdoors, such as pale/reflecting roof colors. But where are the white roofs then? No builders will build them, because people don't ask for them, there's no market. And what about solar panels? Rain collectors? Geothermal systems? There should be an obligation on it; new houses should be equipped with at least one of these! Why only short term investments when we all know our grandchildren will benefit from positive changes we make now?

We've been insulating our little house and I guess the hard work pays off; last week outside it was 100F/39C, but we kept it 75F/25C inside, just by keeping windows, curtains and doors closed all day (and opening all up before going to bed, one fan in the backdoor blowing in an one in the bedroom window blowing out).

Note: a LED has been developed that can replace fluorescend light tubes, which could cut back a country's power usage for lighting by HALF!

Here's the link, it's in dutch, but an online translator could surely help you read it: http://tweakers.net/nieuws/88426/nieuwe-led-lamp-van-philips-moet-klassieke-tl-buis-vervangen.html

Hi roo, that lady with the 7 year old daughter is painting one wall of the room the most violent day glo pink I have ever seen. At least it's only on one wall. I tried to help her tone it down but she is full set on the color. I also suggested green as an accent and gave some lovely examples, no go. She wants gray, and I can only encourage a soft gray in velvet to maybe add a note of soft comfort and a rest for the eye. That poor child will have nightmares with the pink chosen.:)
I just posted on that. Hope I don't get banned.

Right there with you Angela. I just posted something she or others may not like either. mforr, you did a great color job as usual!

I just feel grey is too depressing a colour for a child even though she chose a grey and white doona cover. She doesn't like green because she had it in her last room, but surely just a bit wouldn't go astray, the pink and grey need a third colour. It was when the curtains started going grey that got me. There was an ideabook here one time where 3 little girls had had their bedrooms professionally decorated and I felt so sad that as gorgeous as the rooms were, they were more mummy's showcases than the kids' rooms.

Ez did quite a lengthy talk one time on colours for kids from a psychological viewpoint, it was really interesting. I hope she can input her knowledge.
Roo, I understand your reservations about the gray, but people are going to do what they want. I think the horrendous pink is actually moms choice. Perhaps I can suggest a softer gray than the rug or duvet, in a velvet which will provide some light and shadow, and a trim in a pink and white to lighten it up even further.

I wish she liked the green too, it was so cheerful on that mirror and in the fun rug with the diamond pattern :)
Angela, maybe you could find some tassels in your blue color to add to clear lamp?
Thanks ez - I was more concerned about the grey coming into it than the pink, grey can be a depressing colour if not used right.
    Love those lamps!!!
Posted some lighter gray option with a load of trimming suggestions. We shall see, didn't seem happy with earlier posts
  • 12 years ago
I just deleted my comments since I went there.
Yes, I'm finding I am totally losing the plot on what she wants or likes. Didn't like her defensive comeback with respect to repainting either - I'm doing it my problem!!! Seven year olds can be very definite about things without really knowing anything so it really comes down to the mother giving the child options to build the room around what the kid wants and what is practical and realistic.
I didn't hear back about any of my suggestions, I guess she's done with advice. C'est la vie!!
Yes, I would not be offended with a "sorry don't like that" at least you know whether you are on the right track or not, anything is better than nothing.

Exactly, anything is better than the silence. People are so funny, they ask for advice and when they get it, and it's obviously been thought out with care and attention, they get all bent out of shape if it does not mesh with the secret agenda in their head. Ah well, thems the breaks, kid!! I'm off to bed, no sleep last night. Have a lovely day roo and Pamela too!!! :)

Pamela - even quicker at the top where it says search discussions, just type in OLLD 7/3. I'm about to try to get some work done, this morning is gone and I am nowhere. Isn't it a magical day!!! Too good to waste indoors but still too mushy outside.

I wish that Houzz allowed up to reply to specific posts, and then have a link from the response back to the original post .. I kind of get the gist that you've been commenting on a "Design Dilemma", but I missed the beginning of that conversation!

I just wanted to say that as a child, I shared a room with my Mom .. we lived in my grandmother's house with a bunch of other relatives. No one asked how I wanted the room decorated. When my aunt married & moved out, I inherited her room, and was so happy with that I wouldn't have dreamed of even asking for it to be redecorated for me! When my great-uncle died, I got his tiny bedroom as a study space, and again was thrilled to have it.

I think that when decorating a child's room, they should be asked for input that will be INCORPORATED in the design, with the parents making final decisions. Mom told me that when I started paying the bills, I'd be entitled to make more of the decisions; I think that's an excellent attitude for parents & children to know who's "in charge" and why.
    Well said, astraea
I think the pendulum has swung back, where even experts believe that parents shouldn't try to be their children's "buddies".

We were chatting with a neighbor at one of our project houses. She told us that the son was allowed to pick the color for the exterior of the house. I guess the kid was only about 3 years old at the time! So now I have a sunshine yellow Sears bungalow which will be getting a slightly more restrained paint color.

Could be worse Linda - look good in snow.

Hahaha, people are absolutely nuts!!! Not an ounce of common sense, you could cry if you didn't laugh first.
