sofa colour sage or bold

Our house is grey, our walls our grey, our fireplace feature wall is dark grey. I love the plan for all the things that are set but I’m debating adding some colour with our new furniture. Is that an awful idea? Is a grey sofa better than a blue for example? We are happy to add colour with carpet, accent chairs, pillows too. We already have some family art that will go up at least in some of the space. By its way more room than we’ve ever had before. We are only at drywall now so have time but I want to start thinking about it all. The fireplace wall is actually going to be very different then what is there now and will be asymmetrical in design.

If it's actually sage, I think of cream, rose, peach and the sunset colors. Not grey, but hey....

Aha. According to Lori, Gray Owl belongs to the yellow hue family near green-yellow,

You can also have a secondary accent color, in pillows or throws or vases. Something like a coral or even yellow.

Sage what? I’m not sure where that came from. If from the painting there are tons of colours in it!

Your heading says ‘sage or bold’.

Here are the two other paintings

It's in the title of your OP, at the top of this page --

    "sofa colour sage or bold"

What did you mean to write?

Well, if those are my choices, I pick bold : ) .

Edited to add: And I would pick colours from the first painting you posted, Alison, assuming they go well with/are complementary to Grey Owl.

I’ve tried to edit it and can’t. Argh. Sorry about the confusion! The question really is grey sofa with colour added via carpet, art, textiles etc or be more bold and add a coloured sofa.
Here is an example of a blue sofa. I’m hesitant to go too blue as we have a golden retriever and dark colours just suck her fur to them

    Also love camel and grey.

We went with a slightly darker grey walls. Going for charcoal seating in the living area but intend to go lemon seating in the long entry

The neutral room is nice but somber you'd almost say - nice leather though -- so I notice how well grey sofa goes with the hot lemon/ lime, like Pinebaron's. Seems in first art, and would seem good with watery blues... cute clarification I lol.

Mark post colorful chair - do you like #21? well not sure if you need color in sofa, if you add color in chairs?

All walls in area are grey - light, medium? if kitchen in view, show it please.

Another q - do you like adding wood pieces: distressed or otherwise? - if you do, and already have various art [with wood-y brown] --- grey sofa could allow more focus for the wood and art accents.... ?

If you might fall in love with teal in 1st art, then don't buy blue sofa. :)

Alison, I just remembered you're working with an interior designer. What does she suggest?

Becky we are not working with her for furniture choices. For the kitchen or is open to dining and kitchen but I don’t have a good view with drywall. All interior walls are grey owl. The kitchen has a 16 foot slider leading to the covered deck. Our dining room is between kitchen and great room. We have a dark wood table and white eames like chairs.

We definitely want a large wood coffee table. We worked with a guy to make us a custom live edge vanity and are considering having him make us a big table. His work is amazing. I think we should wait on carpet. The only thing we want to measure out and plan for is the sofa which will be a sectional as it will take time to order. I kind of think grey is better and add colour with chairs or carpet and other pieces.

The one thing to consider if you're going to go with more grey for a more monochromatic approach is to increase the various textures in the room, with rugs, pillows, throws, curtains/shades, other furniture, etc. Without a mix of textures, the final effect is generally unpleasantly flat.

Absolutely agree Becky. We also plan to bring our paint sample to the furniture store and ideally a fabric sample home. Need to get this right!

Here are some, messy, interior shots from today. I’m standing by the stairs and moving around the room. Left to right it is great room fireplace, great room, dining, kitchen.

This is a living room in my idea book that I love.

Very cool -- the sectional and table.... idk if plans for windows, but they could add to that look, or more than furniture: be a permanent contemporary feature, and change pillow or chair some year...

cause that's lots of glass ya can't ignore [unless you won't cover them ??]

We weren’t planning to cover the slider. We were going to get basic custom light filtering shades of some sort for others. But I don’t want a ton. Our yard is private and I love looking out the windows. I’m really leaning toward adding colours in ways other than the sofa as that is easy to do and change. As you said :)

What material will be at fireplace? this would be soft on a whole wall.... ?

Good reviews. 4 sizes. Classic double layered solid voile poly sheer. As a general rule, for proper fullness panels should measure 2-3 times the width of your window/opening. Pole Pocket with Hook Belt. 100% Polyester.

Just checking - sort of at sides of light-filtering... would you like transitional softness like those? or go all straight and sleek in entire room?

I meant blinds on the windows not drapes. I mostly dislike drapes. I know a lot of people love them but not me. Eek

New to comment- but Allison- I like the mustard pops of colour you chose in your last pic! It goes so nicely with grey and also with teal. Your wood furniture will look amazing in your space! :)

Just reviving this as we now have selected our sectional and our fireplace is close to done. Attached are more current pics. We've also somewhat settled on a coffee table but are waiting to see sectional in place first. I'm leaning toward a black leather/metal type chair similar to wasily. Would that work?

This is not exact shade but style. The chaise and ottoman can go on either side of sofa so lots of options to move it around.

Centre part of the fireplace will be kendall charcoal. The white bands/shelves will be white like the trim. The rest is grey owl. The tile is a darkish grey.

This is our hardwood and the actual colour of sectional we ordered.

Oh and this is the coffee table we are tentatively liking.

I only can say that I see similar line of table and horizontal of fp.... yes?

Will anything else in room have that particular stain?

Nothing else has this stain. We will get an area rug but not sure what yet.
Why do you think about the wasily chair in the space? I have a few rugs I like. I’m stuck on the accent chair...
    Something like this.
    last modified: 6 years ago

Imo, it's not a soft-looking chair; It's got lots of lines, almost a Star Wars chair [?].

What do you think about the knots of your hardwood floor? and the grey is nice and soft.... if rug has bit of black, better.

Your art way above seems also soft in tone, and even with small item like a chair, in black - a complement, not sure.

Architect Mark's chairs in colors and stains - might it blend with floor? and part of art [if the art is semi-sure for a while]? or pillows.... yeh pillows!

Grey birch frame and leather... if tiles, etc. are flat.... small detail, buckles? fun

Posting cause of table's stain. Maybe you'd want leather's color [and 1 table] for solid look and feel. Also to repeat wide lines of fp.

I found one at urban barn that is a nice blue but I can’t find Charlie lour of fabric!
Or one from this page but I would choose the fabric? There are hundreds to choose http://www.novofurniture.com/chairs/occasional-chairs/
  • 6 years ago
Or this? Lots of colour options too
knots and rustic there: do you want to strengthen that with leather / chunky knit throw / muted color repeated from art?? or instead straight lines, and more smooth tile and leather, shiny chrome??
The hardwood is far less rustic than the piece appears. We hid the knots under things and in closets...here are a couple of other interior pics

    What about something like this?

Ugh hubby vetoed the one I posted and I agree. I think I need to pause. Get in the house and then decide

We did look at pics together and have some ideas though so it is just a matter of what will actually work in the space once we are there.
