Surprising find! Trifoliate hedges

I've been taking different walking routes in my neighborhood this year to see how many different plants and flowers are being grown in front yards. One route was past a long avenue of hedges in front of many family house/apartments. The hedge had incredibly long thorns and after taking a closer look I saw what looked like trifoliate leaves!

It seems that it has been grown along with other common hedge bushes or maybe in the past it used to only be trifoliates before the thorns became a sidewalk hazard. I thought it was pretty cool to find citrus being grown so close to me for entirely different reasons.

The original trunks looked pretty thick to me so they must be a few years old minimum. I wish I could take the leftovers after they've pruned the hedges. It would make for good grafting practice and rootstock material!

Interesting that you had mentioned that. I had recently heard that Longwood Gardens in Delaware County, PA, had several and found a pic of one that according to their cataloging, was planted before 1955. It is currently almost 15ft tall and 21 ft wide.

Some info on that one and a photo here.

They apparently have a total of 6 specimens, most planted in the mid-90s. Pretty cool!

I have a Poncirus Trifliata hedge on the north side of my house. It ceases to get sunlight by September 21 and I get my first frost when the first powerful cold front come through after October 21. My latest first frost in November 26.

That is so cool Jenny. Thanks for the links! It'll be an interesting place to visit if I ever visit Delaware. I have a feeling there's Trifoliates scattered everywhere unknowingly unless we keep an eye out and spot those leaves and thorns.

Steve I find it pretty amazing that they're citrus trees and can handle all that. Is that hedge where you source most of your rootstock grafting material?

All my grafting material comes from seeds tha tom gave me and Pip gave me and a Seville orange that I harvested the seed from. Poncirus trifoliata and Flying dragon are extremely hard to graft to. I would not waist my time even trying on those 2. PT and FD are good down to -22F
