This is definitely not common milkweed. This is mine flowering in May.

Crissy, the plant in your picture is not a milkweed. It is Lysimachia clethroides. Common milkweed,(Asclepius syriaca ) also has pink flowers. It is a type that will spread a lot if encouraged. I don't know really exactly what species of milkweeds you're growing, because many of them have pink flowers, and more than one have orange flowers, so photos or scientific names would help.

There is little structural resemblance between the two.

Chrissy, never use the Google image search as an identification tool. That's not what it is intended for and will usually result in a false ID.

Bing is more reliable for image search.

I made the mistake of planting loosestrife in my garden about 5 years ago.BIG mistake.this stuff is impossible to irradicate. It pops up ten feet from where I planted it. Also planted Japanese lanterns another BIG mistake.

I got a really pretty milkweed from a friend this yr. Then adopted 3 more from the local elementary school science project at the farmers market. Didn't realize there was diff eff ent types until they just bloomed completely different.

I dont care what anyone says...Google goggles is garbage. never worked and prob never will.

I took the pic od the loostrife to post on here for an id and while trying to upload it I discovered that google photos has a feature that searches google for similar images. That's what suggested milkweed.

I've done my research and in gdtting mixed opinions. what do u all think? invasive or just aggressive? easy to pull new shoots Jr impossible to get rid of?

An image search brings up images from various sources, and unfortunately, the emphasis in the past 18-24 mos has turned almost exclusively to showing images from commercial sites and entities like Pinterest. It used to be a much more helpful tool than it is at the current moment. But at any point in time, some pics will have been accurately labeled, some not. Don't just look @ the pics, consider the source. If they are not from a plant database, there is no way to know if they have been accurately labeled or not (and there can be mistakes in plant DB's.)

My neighbor planted some Lysimachia clethroides in his front yard. Several years later it has spread densely over a quarter of his lawn. It is very aggressive.. After if flowers the whole plant looks terrible. His are in that state right now and it's not attractive. I don't know why he keeps offering it to me as I can clearly see that it is a problem plant and became so very quickly.

the key here ..... is that 'milkweed' .... is a common name ... for a host of different plants ...

in this case.. you need to focus on the latin names .... and use those.. to search for images ....

its not that certain search engines fail .. as it is the imprecise term used for the search ...

its very similar to butterfly bush.. butterfly weed .. etc ....

i fought kicking and screaming for years.. trying to avoid the latin .... but the WWW made me change my ways ....
