They are beautiful! The veining on #1 reminds me of Fritillaria. #2 looks like a flamingo feather. #3 is what I imagine aulicum x mandonii to look like.

They are all stunning but # 2, your gorgeous pink cybister really speaks to me!! And of course, I'm always a lover of aulicum type oranges with lovely green star eyes!!

Your first cybister has lovely netting and as it appears to have 4 flowers which makes it another winner! Love them all!!

Donna: #1 does have 4 flowers. Number 2 didn’t set any seed. I’ll keep trying, and let you know. Glad that the bad weather isn’t affecting you.

They are all very pretty! The first is my fave. I love the netting pattern on the bloom.

Hopefully one of these years my Chico will bloom so I have some prospects at better cybister crosses. Last year my Chico had red blotch and it was quite advanced by the time I discovered it. I cleaned up the bulb, potted it high and bottom watered it. The bulb continued to shrink but grew several bulblets before dying. I treated all the bulblets with strong hydrogen peroxide (NOT the drug store variety, but the stuff used in hydroponics) and heat or bleach and heat. They're all growing strong this year (I don't see a difference between those treated with hydrogen peroxide and those treated with bleach). Your crosses are an inspiration, Blanca!

Once Chico is well established, it can become a robust and prolific beast.

Under my growing conditions, the species H. cybister is shyer to flower.

Both are outstanding seed and pollen parents.

Many thanks, Donna! You’re right. The first two plus the one on the left in the third photo are my own seedlings with papilio parentage. The others are Piyo Piyo (Komoriya) with Pink Floyd in the second photo and H. machupijchense (Telos) on the right in the third photo.

P.S. I forgot to suggest that you try giving your Chico bulbs a deep pot once they have good roots.

Blanca, I've definitely noticed that Chico has deep diving roots! I have one pot of small Chico bulbs that I had temporarily set atop an empty pot of soil... well, the next time I checked, Chico's roots were in the bottom pot too. So, I've kept it growing that way. I'm guessing Chico is also pretty generous with creating offsets. Another one of my small bulbs already has an offset.

They are all really lovely but if I had to I would vote for the second couple... Thank you for posting, Blanca!

Tina: Yes, Chico offsets readily. Finding deep pots that aren’t overly wide has become difficult. Like you, I’ve set pots on top of other pots of soil and found that roots spread into the bottom pot. This method seems good for accommodating extensive root systems. Eventually, repotting can be challenging.

I have a couple tall pots that were designed for cymbidium orchids that would be great for a group of Chicos. For single Chicos, I may need to look into the tall, narrow pots designed for seedling/sapling trees (I haven't seen those in a while... but, then again, I haven't been looking).
