I know it's clematis, which I'm excited about, so I can't wait to see what kind. I've been wanting the C. reticulata for awhile now.

Looks like reticulata to me. And native to your area so a strong possibility.

btw, the leaves are typically held in 3's but variation can occur, especially with younger vines, so even the "mitten shape" is not uniform. But the heavy veining or netting on the leaves is :-)

Second gardengal's remarks. C. reticulata and C. pitcheri are similar, but reticulata's achene beaks are plumose with spreading hairs. The more mature beaks in your photos confirm C. reticulata.

The fact that it's net veined is diagnostic of this species. Other species can have the mitten appearance. I grow many to most of the natives in the viorna group.

If you want to germinate seeds, they do not need stratification. You can soak, then peel off the pericarp, then place in moist paper towel in a ziplock bag. Seeds will produce a radicle ( root) and at the time you can put them in potting mix. I typically use a ziplock bag on the potted plant and vent it occasionally. It's like a small greenhouse.

That is the quickest way to grow new plants.

Thanks, everyone! I'm definitely going to try some seeds. A friend said also that you can winter-sow them where you want them to grow and they'll come up in the spring. I guess that makes sense, since it's how they propagate themselves in the wild. I have so many seeds, I may try both methods.

So I've been reading, and I've decided to try several methods and see what works best. I'll try

1. Soaking and removing the pericarp (read this wasn't necessary, but I'll try it anyway, because @carol23_gw is very knowledgeable about these things)

2. Planting in soil with the furry ends sticking out, like with Adenium seed

3. Germinating in water - had never heard of this until now, but this works well for seeds in the Amaryllis family

4. Winter Sowing straight into the ground.

I'm not trying the giberrelic acid treatment because that stuff is expensive and I don't germinate enough seeds to make it worth the money.

Will report back about which method works best.
