Yes, I think hakonechloa is a lovely companion to hostas. And those sure are some beautiful hostas. I wish mine looked that good. They look a bit like my favorite Great Expectations.

Hakonechloa is a shade grass, requiring ample moisture. It hates full sun. I'm suspecting this planting gets good morning sun and lots of cool moist air.

Hakonechloa grows like a weed here year 'round. The seeds sprout everywhere, and I tossed mine after it tripled in size in a year and began to take over surrounding plants.

wow.. zone info is so useless ... north of me by a hundred miles or so ... and north of buffalo .... and yet a z7 .. this is called lake effect ... the lake delaying fall and winter .. the retained heat of the large body of water ... and delayed spring.. when the lake takes longer to warm ...

go figure ...

my point.. its a cultural variable of this area ....

not to mention... rather far north.. in regard to sun intensity ...

My variegated Hakonechloa loves the more than half day of sun it gets. While my All-Gold had to be moved to the shade. It starts slow but really gets rolling after it's say, 4 years old.

I love the textural contrasts of hostas and grasses together.

Just to give some perspective, our "Niagara on the Lake" is at the same latitude as California's Mendocino county (and due to its moderate climate and good soil has been a centre of grape production and wine making for many decades).

What often comes to mind re the latitude # for Canada is the 49 parallel i.e the "main" border with the States. But Niagara on the Lake is significantly south at a latitude of 43 degrees.

In your 15 minutes of map gazing did you notice that the southern most point for Canada is at a latitude of approximately 41.8 degrees (Pelee Island) and that there are 27 US States that are at least partly north of Pelee Island (and 13 States entirely north of this location)?
