I am putting an edge in so it collects the water around the base. That should help or make tree rings.

I think 20 min. is adequate. And keep a close eye on overwatering. Lemme explain. In July/aug I double my sprinkler watering. Sept/Oct roll around, and if I forget to scale back watering, problems develop. I’ve had the most plant problems during that period than during peak of summer.

@Matt I need to make the edging taller somehow, to help with the runoff issue. Thankfully with the sprinkler on low there was very little runoff.

@bossyvossy I was thinking about watering them on low every 2-3 days in Summer. I'll slow down once September and October roll around. I was just afraid 20 mins was too short of a time. It seemed to really soak the soil so I'll continue with that over hand watering.

I agree — they can be prone to root rot, ime. I think your watering amount sounds fine. In the summers of extreme drought, I’d water mine very deeply on an average of 2 times a week ... but mainly because I had them among cannas. I always did a finger test on other days, to check if they needed more. And some types of these are more drought tolerant than others.

I always hesitate discussing watering here, because varying conditions are such a factor — sun amount, wind, soil types, etc — but you’ve had yours for years, so it looks like you’ve been doing what works. :)

Thanks Miz_G. I used to have cannas around mine, but now I just have a couple of large crinums by them. I made sure I put a lot of mulch and compost around them too. It's amazing how the mulch has kept the soil moist even during the extreme heat. I'm hoping they'll tower over the house this year.
