Tree's always are looking for more light, so the tree behind another will try to outgrow the other. I like my tree's short and fat. Some of my young tree's have a fruit or two,which is a good sign that the cuttings came from a fruit bearing tree.

I am anxious to see what they will do in the next year or two.

I am sure it is not you. I am probably the only one here that has a primary interst in kumquats. I am interested in Meiwa, Fukushu, and New Zealand lemonade. I would like to have some trees that produce a good quantity of fruit that can not be bought locally. It seems that almost everyone else on here is interested in getting the tangerine, oranges, satsuma, pomelo, grapefruit, and lemons of rare varieties. I also have figs hardy Chicago.

My topic idea pretty much off the beaten track..

Steve there is a lot of hype in any forum. I am growing Santa Teresa, can send you cuttings. This lemon is just as good as NZ. I can even graft one for you if you not in a hurry. Don't have any rootstock left.

My grafting skills are giving me less than a 2% success rate. I am in no hurry for anything now but I am interested later/next year.

I think the determinant factor in tree size is the rootstock. I have one seedless Nagami on Macrophylla... after 8 years in ground in the tropics it is maybe 11 feet tall; but produces fruit year round

My in ground Fukushu is seed grown and I have 4 seed grown Meiwa and 1 Meiwa on Kuharske Citrange. I don't know whether one is naturally shorter than the other. Whould the kuharske Citrange push the natural size of the meiwa larger than normal for that tree

Although it looks like it might be limited to trees with rather large caliper.

I haven't tried it yet but plan on trying it sometime on my figs and maybe on my citrus.

I have a grafted Fukushu a few months now, and it seems a moderate but steady grower. I like its form and appears easy to care for. The fruit, never had one but I have a few coming so we'll see. But from a container perspective, it looks like a winner since they don't take up much room and are "pretty". I too have had grafting issues, gotta try again, I'm a rooter....I shove crap in the ground and pots and most times they take....grafting - I go pear to pear and apple to apple and they don't take

Four Winds nursery list Fukushu as 8-12 foot trees and the Meiwa as 6-8 foot trees. My Meiwa will go east of my Fukushu. It is not time to plant in ground yet. I will plant when the glass goes on for the winter.

Steve, I have only Meiwa kumquat, it grows for me at medium-slow pace, it's on Volkamer roots. I have no other kumquat to compare it to.

Steve, what do you like about the Meiwa tree? I ripped mines right out even in it's healthy state and gave it away. The fruit was horrible bud for me anyways.

Skin is sweet with a rich creamy taste and fell. The flesh is mildly tart and mildly sweet. I don't have to peal. It should be much easier to grow than any large fruited tree. It give fruit into early winter when every thing else is dormant.
