There is a condensation or drain line that can get clogged. Lots on the web. We fixed ours several years ago so I don’t recall the details.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful information. I just watched the video and that is exactly the problem we are having. Do you know if Kitchenaid is providing the part as the guy on the video said that it is a common issue with Kitchenaid/Whirlpool fridges?

Ours did the exact same thing. We unclogged the black rubber nipple, and the bottom of the freezer was still icing up. Rather than order and replace the drain tube, we unplugged the fridge and let it sit a day and a half. This allowed the drain tube to thaw completely. No more problems!

Yes, you definitely want to defrost the the freezer compartment. You need a defrost because the plugged up spout results in an ice build up in the drain line as well as behind the louvers at at the back of the freezer compartment. (That's is where condensate collects.) Personally, I sped up the defrosting by aiming a couple of fans at the louvers in the back of the freezer compartment. Reduced the defrost time to about four hours.

Also, I recall seeing somebody in one of the DIY videos using a hair dryer to speed up melting the ice behind the louvers at the top rear of the KA's freezers' compartments. Probably not a good idea. The louvers may look metallic but are actually plastic, at least on my 6 y.o KA fridge. I'd worry about heat from a hair dryer deforming the louvers and so recommend against using one.

As for ordering a part, I did not bother. The little silicon rubber spout slips on and off easily, so I just check and clean it whenever I vacuum out the motor compartment every couple of years.

I had a similar problem. Called KA and they sent repairman. It was a bit of plastic wrap caught between the gasket and the freezer. Caused a huge buildup of ice.

Hi! My mother had that exact same problem with her KitchenAid fridge a couple years ago, maybe a year after the warranty was over. She called KitchenAid service, and they sent a tech to replace the drain gutter for free. The tech mentioned a service bulletin for that part and you could tell the new part had a much larger diameter. She never had any problems since.

I had this problem but it was just that the freezer wasn't pushed in all the way.

Thanks for the information. Is your mother in Canada? I called KitchenAid and they just quoted approximately how much this repair would cost as they said a tech would need to assess it. They said there is no warranty beyond the year for anything except the compressor.

Yes, we are in Canada. When she placed the service call, the dispatcher told her they knew about the problem and therefore they sent a tech free of charge to replace that gutter. The tech said they had many problems with this and that they have very few issues with the new improved part. Maybe you should push to get it replaced for free. A two year old fridge should be trouble free and ice free.

I called KitchenAid and they are sending my mother the part free of charge. They will not pay for the repair. We are hiring a local repair person to do the work for my mother. Thanks again for your help everyone.
