Master Bedroom Help!

last modified: 7 years ago

Hello, my new master bedroom is "finished" and now needs lots of help with furniture and decorating. I really don't know my style, but husband likes black furniture, and we both like the simple shaker/plain look. Not fancy people.

Wall color is BM Jamestown Blue. Trim is Dark Walnut. Closet doors/bed/ceiling light is black.

Picture of my bed frame. (stock picture)

Pictures are older but the bed is in between the two windows. I am going to try to stain the closet doors so they aren't so stark.

I am looking for art ideas, nightstands/dressers, bedding, perhaps an end of bed bench, etc. I will post a floor layout to get an idea of the space.

I keep looking at this one... Honestly I can't decide if I really like distressed or grunge look. I like some rustic/raw but not dirty looking if that makes sense. lol

    Haha too rustic for me.

So you think no black nightstands? I like some of the other wood colors but I'm not sure what the "rules" are about mixing wood stains.

    last modified: 7 years ago

Don't 'they' say don't try to match stains, but it might pertain as much to the wood used/ and its grain, that could look 'off' - a modern concern isn't it!!?

    More colors of the nightstand

those are better !… and you have tell again... how many stains: is it basically 2? so don't go overboard on another imo. I thought café above might be closet brown-black.

Your nightstand was displayed in just 1 photo with fabric headboard -- with metal straight lines, idk about the cup handles...

My interior doors/trim is Dark Walnut stain. My floors are Character Walnut. So basically 2.

How do you feel about the top one's color in my last post?

    last modified: 7 years ago

Matching media console (which I'm also shopping for) which is nice. Color looks better in this photo.

ETA: I'm not against replacing handles. I could do bar handles that match my closet doors.

    That's an idea. :)

After shopping for 10 hours and not finding much I am going to try to build my own. lol. I'll also make my own mountain art since that piece is $300. I'm pretty handy, but we'll see how it goes. I've built multiple tables, desks, etc. But I've never attempted drawers. Wish me luck.

everdebz - where are you finding these nightstands? I'm currently in the same dilemma - black wrought iron headboard and walls are SW Keystone Gray but need to update our furniture and lighting. We both like black but the dust would show in hours on black furniture.

Some mock ups! One with stained furniture and one with black furniture. I would use bar pulls rather than the cup pulls. Thoughts?

Also here is the other wall across from the bedroom. Don't look at my ugly dresser and clutter. lol. I would like some sort of large media console piece here. A larger TV will be hung on the wall and perhaps a lamp & chair on the left.

I like 1st photo: black/brown dressers and wall art ...

closet and dressers are dark, but on separate walls.

With either dresser, this made me think of your room; canvas has light and dark. Simple yet rustic look:

Does all the furniture need to be the same color? I'm going to have two nightstands, a dresser, and a media console. Would it be better to have the nightstands stained maybe and the dresser/media black, or opposite. I have no idea at this point. I thought I preferred stained furniture but looking at the mock up the black looks better. I just don't want to overdo either or make the room too dark.

The decor/art will depend on the furniture. If the furniture is black I will try to pull in lighter or stained pieces, if the furniture is stained I will probably go with darker art.

We picked up this art. I think it really matches what we are trying to go with. Similar grunge/rustic look to the horse painting. Has blacks and brown tones.

I think these are cute too.

Absolutely those -- hard without being there, but yes to not making it dark unless you have fab day/ night lighting, just to see well! and for night mood [instead of depressing]...

You might add a tiny item of green or bronze metal over the mountain art - Do you have a rustic item that could hang horizontally over?

    Random thoughts:

    - I like the shade of blue, but I'm not crazy about the doors. I'd rather see white doors /brown trim to brighten things up ... and white would tie into the snow-capped mountain artwork that is central to the room. Your bedroom windows aren't all that big, so lightening things up would be a positive.

    - I prefer the nightstands with an "open spot". They look lighter in a modest-width bedroom and give you a place to set your book without cluttering the top of your nightstand.

    - I'm not crazy about the light fixtures in the bathroom. They seem too "finished" /not rustic enough, and I don't care for visible bulbs.

    - The bathroom vanity seems to be lacking something right now ... but I think some chunky, rustic hardware could bring them into the suite's theme.

Everdebz I like the idea of adding in a little bronze or green. Actually we did pick up this smaller art as well and it ties nicely. I will keep a look out for some bronze pieces.

Mrs Pete I'm not sure about the white. I think it would look rather stark to have a 10' long wall bright white when everything else is dark. But I do think we need some lightening up from somewhere. Perhaps a light colored chair or brighter art?

I do like the idea of an open spot on the nightstands because it is very nice to hide the remotes and books instead of laying them on top.

The bathroom is definitely not rustic and it wasn't trying to be. Husband does not like the same style throughout each room. He says every room is it's own space and likes them to be different. I think people would freak out if they saw the rest of my house, lol. Every room is unique, and not sophisticated/mature at all. The foyer is green with orange foxes, the kitchen is light green and pink pigs, the guest bath is blue and yellow rubber ducks, and the living room is grey and aqua.

I'm not a huge fan of the vanity light but it's the best we could agree on at the time. I'm keeping an eye out for different shades because I agree that visible ugly bulbs are no fun.

The vanity hardware hasn't been installed yet which is why it looks blank. But it's not rustic or chunky. It's octagon capiz to tie into the chandelier and the mirror. (not pictured but it's an octagon)

I actually found two dressers than I liked for a deal so I'm picking them up on Saturday. They are stained but once I get them in the room I will see how they look, I can always paint them black if needed. I may keep the stained dressers and go with black nightstands. I'll let photoshop decide.

    Okdoke… as they say. :)

What if you moved dresser to the left just a bit; added your green tree art and 1 or 2 more in a step-up pattern going up toward door's height?

Just happened upon this today, and remembered a dark-ish room can add gleam! 40" too wide for dresser on side wall....

To complement tree, would your saying go with it as mini-gallery whatchacall it?

This room is perfect for a Tapestry! Especially if you are outdoorsy kind of people -Creates a more natural vibe - Hang it on, walls, ceiling, over windows, lots of options. The dark walls along with a wall hanging would make the room warm and romantic in my opinion. Here's some examples I've found. Tapestries

Hey, me again! I'm back with some updates/new ideas.

I bought the two dressers but they did not turn out exactly what I was expecting so I'm not sure if I will keep them or not.

Now here are two photoshop mockups of some of the pieces I am considering for my bedroom. The dresser on the right is the dresser I purchased but I am unsure if I like it/will keep it. Again it looks more orangey that it really is. (must be the light of my pictures) I would switch out it's hardware for regular ORB bar pulls. It has a matching long dresser which would be used on the wall opposite the bed as a media center.

Two different choices. One with black nightstands and one with stained nightstands.

Thoughts? Does the rug go with the duvet?

I really like the simple lamps. They do have another color option which I like better but I am unsure if all the blues will match or if it will be too blue?

    Spa Blue Color

We would have some art on the right wall as well but pieces to be determined. Nightstands are not picked either, just a generic simple choice for the mockups. I will probably build them myself.

Curtains are also an option but again not sure what color/style.

    Help!?

hi...black too harsh (closet has imo a better browned black). if not too orange, I'd favor those.

Sorry, not liking that particular rug... don't hate it though...

It appears to me that the art fights with the bedding, which in turn fights with the rug. Too many geometric patterns going on, IMO.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Any ideas for a rug that would work?
Husband likes white/blue/greys over cream or tan, just FYI. I love chevron (and it would tie into the mountain theme/art) but I am having trouble finding a grey chevron rug that isn't in your face bold.

    White or blue lamps?

And stained nightstands seems to be the common consensus?

    You guys are the best!

    Is this one any better?

Are we talking with the large pattern on bedding? if you're set on it, let's see that first.

Possible inspiration bedroom picture that involves white trim, but it is just a suggestion.....in lieu of bed skirt and headboard, consider doing a bold wallpaper or stencil on wall behind headboard.

On my other thread I got the opposite advice. They liked the black nightstands, and the rug. Now I am confused. lol.

The duvet and mountain art are 100% going to stay. That is the only duvet my husband and I could agree on. Everything else is up for debate.

Susan Davis I appreciate the photos but that is not my style at all.

All depends on the person -- if you want to emphasize contrasts of medium stain with quite darker closet and black stands along too -- do that, and ok.

If you want softer contrast, maybe to focus on art and bedding, then a blend-in nightstand....

This is soft neutral - and could be better than a patterned rug. Looks like jute they say, but it's indoor/outdoor.

Thanks for the ideas! I especially like that first rug.

But now husband is saying he isn't sure he wants a rug so that is on hold. Goodness it is hard to pick things when two people with different tastes have to agree. lol.

We are going to try actually moving in the two dressers and seeing how they look. Hopefully that will give me a better idea if the room needs more black or more light.

Still need to pick nightstands. Would like a slot on top to put remotes/books, and then the rest enclosed. They are incredibly hard to find in a big enough size for my space.

    So I did a thing...

I found a matching set of Kincaid Furniture nightstands for $50. The only thing wrong with them is they both have a little bit of paint peeled off on top, which is easy enough to fix. Otherwise they are perfect. It was a deal I couldn't pass up since Kincaid nightstands easily go for several hundred dollars a piece and these were the size I wanted. Sooo I guess we are going with black. lol.

Here is a picture of one of the dressers. They will work for now, but we will likely keep an eye out for new ones. Husband is liking the black furniture. But we are going to have to work on brightening up the space if we do get black dressers too.

Thoughts on which color lamp, or neither? Keeping in mind this is the duvet I will be purchasing.

I'd bring bedding's colors into the room first / paint color also to consider... so to me you might not want the blue-green at right.

I'm wondering if you'll have white shades.

I'm kinda leaning towards some sort of metal and seeded glass lamps but I haven't found anything I love yet. The hunt is on.
