ROSA: Sui Mei Ren

SUI MEI REN

http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.62517.3&tab=1

Discovered in along with some other roses by Katsuhiko Maebara and Prof. Yoshihuro Ueda (of Japan) in the Huaian Yueji Yuan(Huaian Rose Garden) in Jiangsu Province of China. Said to be ancient Chinese Roses.

Found Rose, China / Bengale, Hybrid Tea, Tea. FWIW, To me, going by habit, foliage and structure, this rose looks nothing like what we know as a China Rose.

Apricot - cream, darker center. [Blush, cream outer petals.]. [Light pink.]. (Color is quite changeable, for me, in coastal Southern California. Moderately full bloom form. Thornless (or almost).

What a hauntingly beautiful rose. Given the changeability of its color, it does seem to fall into the China/tea rose realm. Jeri, is your specimen mature enough for you to comment on its eventual size? I know that would be a guess since some of the teas seem to grow and grow..........like Jackie's giant 100-year-old Le Vesuve.

No. It's still in a 5-G -- but I'd like to get it into the ground soon. Not, I think a climber, but could be a tall bush.
No hint, though, of the twiggy habit that's typical of the Chinas. And the foliage (as I think Kim Rupert has remarked) seems to be more European in its characteristics.
Also, this bloom is BIG. Eastily 4-ins. in diameter.
Had I stumbled across it somewhere, I'd almost have taken it for an Austin Shrub.

What a stunner! Gorgeous photos, too—love how the bloom is lit! :-)

    I love the color

Loving that color too! That is such a pretty rose.

To my eye, it's a Bourbon-Tea, like SdlM. I imagine it's something along the lines of a descendant of 'Rose Edouard' and something like 'Park's Yellow Tea-Scented China'.

And, it DEMANDS heat. When that plant and the one I have were in gallon cans here with the sun shining on the can sides, they performed. Mine is in a five gallon can and hardly grows. Now the sun is higher and temps are increasing, it's putting out a little growth, but nothing like they did in overheated one gallon cans. Both are the same age from Malcolm Manners at the HRF conference at The Huntington a year ago last October. I guess I have to put it somewhere it can fry to push this one to grow.

I think they are pulling our legs when they say this rose is from 1200 AD or whatever. It looks modern to me.

Cedemas -- I have suspected that at the same time some roses were traveling from China to Europe, others travelled from Europe to China.

Beautiful. I've been drooling over this rose but cannot let myself pull the trigger. Hearing from Kim that it must have heat helps my resolve. But for anyone else interested, it was recently listed as available on ARVR's site. Sigh.

Jeri, any fragrance notes? Please tell me "None at all!" Otherwise, my resolve may crumble.

Actuall, Shebabee, it is heavily fragrant. REALLY fragrant.
I can't describe the fragrance, but it's powerful -- and nothing remotely like any of my Chinas.

It’s stunningly beautiful, Jeri! Thank you for posting this, not only for the pleasure of viewing the gorgeous photos, but for the reminder. I need to write the nursery back, and see what’s going on with mine, again. I bought and paid for Sui Mei Ren in January or February, along with September Morn. September Morn needed to grow some more, so we waited. I’m still waiting. I did hear from her about a month ago, that my Sui Mei Ren was “misplaced”. She wasn’t quite sure what had happened to it. I need to review my response email, (I THINK and hope, that I wrote one) to see what’s going on. I’m not especially eager to have them arrive at this time of year, too hot! It’s a beautiful rose, and I look forward to growing it. Thanks for sharing. Lisa

EYE look forward to you growing it, too.

And you're right. You don't want it now. We have some things that need planting, but not until the heat goes down.

Thank you, Jeri (I think!). Oh, dear, how will I resist now?!

Lisa -- "misplaced" really doesn't sound good.

i hesitate to say this but my Eyes For You that was supposed to arrive in late June did not show up. I didn't inquire after it since I had realized around then that only tall roses would survive here.

Of course, I wouldn't like for roses I ordered to be shipped in this terribly hot weather.

But if things are delayed -- I think it's reasonable to ask.
