Well, well, well: no problems. I have a feeling Houzz is getting hung up on the photo I included. So, sorry, folks, you'll have to make do with a word picture instead.

It rained yesterday. The rain lasted for much of the morning and part of the afternoon, at times falling hard. We got about an inch, enough to make a difference. It's not enough to end the drought, but perhaps it's the beginning of the end of the drought.

I've written about my rose 'Lamarque'. It started as a cutting put in the propagating beds to root, then grew too big to transplant, so I decided to hoist it up on pergola to protect the cuttings and vegetables in the beds with its shade. It's a crazy idea; I don't recommend it. 'Lamarque' began growing this year. It doubled its height, from one to two meters, and flowered a bit for a good part of the summer, in spite of its hot dry position and no irrigation. It has been very drought tolerant, as have other Noisettes in the garden.

Today when I went out to have a look at 'Lamarque', I saw new growth is sprouting from every node, and developing wonderfully fast. I'm looking forward to a lot of fragrant white blooms in a few weeks, assuming all goes well (no more hailstorms!). It's amazing what water can do.

I wonder if the Noisettes' Musk rose ancestry contributes to their drought tolerance. My Musk rose has not only stayed green all summer, but has bloomed a bit and recently has put out new growth and flowered, just like its descendents the Noisettes.

Congratulations on the RAIN! That sounds so wonderful. We won't get any here for a month or two, but the temperature today is supposed to be in the 80s, instead of 100, and the garden is very happy about that.

I love Lamarque. Ours came from a rooted cutting from one which had climed over our next door neighbor's fence searching for light. When we moved in here, that property was still owned by a old (at least to my eyes 35 years ago!) man who told us that he could remember being amazed by my DH's grandfathers giant car of some kind, which I know was in the 1930s, because the ancestors built a new garage for it then. The Lamarque I got the cutting from in 1990 was there then, he said, so I think mine is an old clone.

Well, anyway. I was out this morning doing cleanup, and my word there's a lot of cleanup to do. Since I'm still without a car, I also can't pick up my helper to come work, which is not good for either of us. At least, as I mentioned recently, I have abundant pruned material to spread around. I'm also considering, if I can find the energy, just raking up the vast amount of litter from the hailstorm and using it for mulch.
