Oh Bea: I just was lamenting about a mystery creature(s) that stripped my young blue pea vine. I've only thrown mental darts at a rabbit or slug. Now you've mentioned lubbers and I do recall seeing 1 or 2 in the area. My rabbit or slug may be innocent! - June

Rita, I bet you're right about it being deer.. I didn't blame them because our property is totaly fenced so harder for deer but I know they jump in sometimes because I've seen hoof prints.

And hub just told me it ate one of his prize daylily flowers about to open :(

I'm assuming those are your container sweet potatoes. As long as they didn't eat the very tips, the sweet potatoes will continue to grow. If they ate the tips, they vines will put out more tips, but they can't keep eating the tips, or the potatoes won't get bigger.

I think deer too, but i don't know what to do about it. Deer do love sweet potato leaves, and so do rabbits, but rabbits will eat the whole danged vine.

well, i'll have to run out this morning and check my plants!

I thought deer, too. When they ate my agapanthus, they ate it cleanly off the top.... no jagged edges, no remnants.

I vote for deer as well.... had them come into my fruit tree orchard and graze on some weeds and that is exactly what the damage looked like...

Yes DG the sweet potato plant is planted in that container which sits right outside my fenced veggie garden and the vines have grown through the fence to inside so no one can get them. They have all rooted in the ground. I should have a great crop of sweeties!

That damn deer visited again last night. I guess my firespikes and one of my roses needed trimming.
