Flooring Design Dilemma

We are trying to match up a hardwood stain to match our vinyl flooring we put in our basement. The stairs are real wood and need to be stained to match. We went with a lighter greyish beige on the vinyl but cannot get a stain to match. Any suggestions?

It is difficult to get hardwood to look gray - and since gray is a little trendy, consider living with a comfortable mismatch - maybe just leave the hardwood natural and put on a runner with grays in it - depends what the hardwood is. Chances are when the time comes to replace the vinyl, you will no longer want the grayish color.
