Empty Entryway :(

We have lived in our new house for about a year now and still can’t figure out what to do with our entryway.

We like the idea of a bench and maybe a mirror, but really need some Houzz help here. We also would like to hear your thoughts about light fixtures and runners. As you can see in the photo, we already have an entryway table and gallery wall set up a bit further down the hallway. We have a small bench and coat hook setup near the garage entrance.

Thanks in advance for ideas and helping making our house more of a home!

Hello Brie, it is so great that you have space around your entryway! A console table and bench could look great here, I actually wrote a blog post recently that talks about this very topic (on our website) and shows different potential style layouts. If you aren't sure you need another table, bench, hooks, etc. because you have it farther down the hall, maybe you would want to just do something decorative like a tall wainscoting? That would dress up the space. You could potentially add hooks to it, you could use the top cap as a place to rest pictures or other art... lots of potential! For light fixtures, I would suggest a foyer pendant or a semi-flush mount light. Without knowing your taste, there are many different styles you could do a wainscoting in.. below are a few different ideas!

Your home is beautiful. And since you already have the traditional entryway elements in other places and the foyer itself is a it narrow, I think your idea of a bench and mirror is a great idea. With decorative pieces like wall hooks, and an umbrella holder or a coat rack. And a large window pane style mirror or full length mirror.

Beautiful space. Are you open to wallpaper? Two larger lamps and stools underneath your console. One or two larger in scale artwork for visual interest over the console. Simple modification yet statement pieces to greet guest. Best of luck. A visual, however in your design style.

These are all great suggestions, thank you! Love the wainscoting idea. Would you do that on both walls, or just one?

And if we find a bench that fits on that wall, which side should it go on?

Not a decorating pro but, as a practical matter, you really don't have sufficient space to add furniture in your front entrance hall. You need the door hinge side of the wall to remain completely clear for the door to fully open and you need elbow room for people walking through this space -- on both sides of the entry hall.

In addition to a good paint job and interesting light fixture (minimum you need), you could add wainscoting to the walls in white like the door trim. That should remove the visually empty vibe without crowding your space; if not, you could either be creative with the paint above the wainscoting or add wallpaper above the wainscoting. (Personally not a fan of wallpaper, but that's a matter of individual taste.)

Hi Brie, I like the wainscoting on both sides to keep it symmetrical. I would put the bench on the wall that is on the hinge side, so the door swings back toward it. That way when people walk in they won't walk directly into the bench!

Often, the way the entry space is used depends upon the weather zone you live in. For colder and wetter climates, you may need a boot mat and hooks for wet outerwear and umbrellas right inside the door area. In the southwest, you may need a spot for sandy shoes and sun hats. Do you drop your keys (hat, briefcase, purse, tote bag) in the entry? Do you immediately shed a jacket or sweater and need a place to hang it?
In your case, does having coat hooks in the second hall area work well for your family? Do you need a bench for removing shoes or boots? The actual entry area doesn't have much space for coats on a hall tree or wall pegs, and if there are two or more guests coming in, you must move out of that space rather quickly to get the door closed.
I like groveraxle's renderings of attractive rugs and some art on the wall. Your current entry mat doesn't add any color or interest, even with the doggie there, and the mat is barely large enough to wipe one's shoes on.

Love groveraxle's comment about the dog in the foyer! So true! But I also like the artwork and rug suggestion, since I don't like to feel crowded coming into a home. Or a mirror to visually widen the area.

We like the idea of a nice rug and some plants. Perhaps some colorful artwork as well?
