Nice space! Is the burgundy on the walls wallpaper? All of it, even upstairs? I guess ripping that out would be a lot of work... Do you think you can paint over the top of it? Regarding the color, that would depend on what you like and the decor in your other rooms.

I would lighten the space with paint the color of the tan or a beige in the rugs. It will still permit a nice contrast with the white trim.

Thank you all for the feedback! Yes, the burgundy on the walls is the paper, and is not the primary color in any of the other rooms in the house. Though there is lot’s of red mixed into our decor! I am prepared to take down the wallpaper, and possibly replace with a different paper if needed. I worry that one solid paint color, even if it’s lighter, will be too plain. Wallpaper could add some nice dimension.

If you are going to do wallpaper again, then pick one that doesn't look like paint!

I would consider doing a embossed paper in white and then do the lower wainscoting black. Then paint the railing black. Do a new runner in a black and white animal print and carry that onto large pictures on the wall going up the stairs with a black narrow frame, large white mat and small interesting black and white photos. Let me find some examples that might show you visually those elements.

I like the burgundy but a dark blue would look nice too.

I really like your space, including the color, but I understand the desire for change. We used an embossed wallpaper on one wall of our dining room but the DR and the kitchen are all painted the same color. So that one wall just adds a little something extra without screaming at you. I really love it.
