Creatures from the drain

Alisande, it sounds very much like the two, I found in my bathroom. One was already on the floor and was huge, and the cat had injured it. The other was still in the tub next to the drain and was quite a bit smaller than the other one. I got them both, and wrapped in paper towels, took to outside trash. I have never seen them before. They had the feelers on the front, and they were very long. Wish I had taken a picture, but, I went into panic mode, because, I never get anything like that, or even spiders in the house and the fact, that I have never, seen anything like that. Maybe a wasp now and then that manages to be quick and get into the door, and flies that always manage to get in the door, but, never anything like that. Its been about 3 wks now, and I havent seen any more of them.

It wasn't one of those giant flying cockroaches? We have them here in the trees and they come out at night. I hate those things.

Wondering if it is type of grasshopper that a friend posted a picture of. This is not his picture but if you scroll down there are several pictures of a black phrase. As they age they apparently develop wings so pictures of younger ones only show a tiny or no wing. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/lubber.htm

Nope, it didn't have grasshopper legs. And besides, I'm in the northeast--which I should have mentioned in my first post.

Nope, it looked nothing like the cockroaches (thank heavens).

I never thought of freezing an insect (or telling it to chill out), Rhizo. Thanks for the idea! Cat_ky, I wish you had done this. :-)

Ya know, I like bugs as part of nature and all, and that's a good idea to chill a bug if you want to slow it down for identification, but no way am I going to click on any of these links, LOL!

My first thought was a cicada but then realized that you'd know what those look like. Was it pretty in any way? (sorry Nickel) I'm curious to learn what it was.

This could possibly be it. The general shape and the wing position are very similar. I didn't notice the veining on the wings, but my eyesight has been blurry all morning--something I didn't notice until I came downstairs and turned on the computer. So it's likely I wouldn't have seen the veins anyway.

I'm with carabubble! OMG I would've freaked out totally! Coming up out of the drain?? I'd have nightmares about that one! lol

We can't know if it was coming up from the drain or just coming out -- possibly after a long night out, doing whatever 'they' do. lol Maybe you want to thoroughly FLUSH that drain! One of these was already too many.

Could it be one of those big assassin bugs?

By the way, I saw something that I have never seen before. It was a bright orange katydid. See a lot of them here but always green.

It may have got in the sink and crawled down the drain where it could get water

I think I have seen similar here but not lately.

Snakes out of toilets and bugs out of sink drains

Watery horrors you treat with much disdain

Wigglers and wobblers and large insects with wings

These are not part of my favorite things!

A little update: My daughter-in-law just told me she found two of what sounds like the same insect in their pool today. I guess it likes water!

The one in your picture, has some resemblence. I got rid of them so fast. I guess, I should have looked it over better. The ones I saw, seemed to be a bit wider, than the pictured one though. The feelers seemed to be overly long. No, it wasnt one of the flying cockroaches. I saw several of those in Florida several years ago, and one managed to get into our suitcase. However, he didnt get far, when the suitcase was opened. I live in southern Ky, close to Tennessee border.

Well, I found out the orange katydid is a rare mutation....and sometimes they are even pink. I hope it is out there making more little orange katydids.

If it was a Giant Stonefly their young live in water. They look similar to silverfish but need good water to live in.

I am with Nickel..not clicking on any of the links. I can respect bugs living in their home but not mine. A few nights ago when I pulled the boys bedding down I found a big spider running across the bottom sheet. I grabbed both my slippers and got it in between them and ran for the door. .not sure if I dropped it. So glad the boys were in the bath brushing their teeth or no way would Tim have gotton in that bed. This isn't the first time I've found a spider in a bed...even spiders like my sheets. Lol

Wow, Marilyn, that is pretty! I love katydids, and in fact have two framed photographs of them on the wall behind me, but have seen only green.
