Help with kitchen make over

We are in escrow for our house. Built in 2005. Single story 2500 sq ft. I would like to update the kitchen. New countertops, new pulls, new flooring(whole house), new paint(whole house). The cabinets are brown/cherry in color. I’m very good condition. Not to fond of the cathedral door style, but don’t want to reface because it would be out of my budget.

My goal would be to move away from traditional and more towards modern, but maybe limited by the cabinet doors. Was thinking of a greige paint color, lighter quartz color countertop and maybe a woody greyish wood floor (vinyl, laminate, wood).

Thoughts?

We did a facelift on our kitchen & decided to put light hickory floors throughout the first level, very light beige paint (Clay Beige BM), Fiore Bianco granite, white crackle subway tile & new hardware.

I think your kitchen could use similar elements to give it a facelift. I would personally make you island one level & a different shape.

@mark_rachel, did you stain or paint your cabs or are those original? I love the color!

I don't think there is any 'maybe' about it, those cabinets do not say anything but 'traditional'. The colour scheme you are thinking of sounds fine, but is it really worth it to you to (in terms of money/labour) to paint the cabinets, when they will still look traditional? Only you can decide that, but I would think about just living with them as is, until you can afford to reface or replace them. Just my opinion though.

Were these pictures virtually staged? The furniture looks weird and not to scale or something.

The cool thing about this kitchen is that it has a good layout.

The kitchen will never be modern with those doors and island shape. But a transitional look could work. Absolutely no to the grey wood floors. They always look cheap and unnatural don't date your home by putting them in. Start by getting rid of the red, and then live in the kitchen for a while. You may find there are some layout things you want to change so don't waste money on a cosmetic update before you know it won't need more.

Forgot to add that the island will be one level and will go with a square shape.

I understand I am limited by the current door style. I just want to bring it up to date as much as I can.

    Thanks for all the inputs.

I would really suggest waiting until you can update the cabinets. It's going to be 'almost' done at the end of a big renovation. You'll wish you waited. No sense in ripping out new counters in a few years to replace the cabinets that are driving you nuts.

If you don't like the cabinet style, it would be foolish to put new countertops on them. Moving in to a new house is exciting, but you really should live in it for a year to see how it works for you before you jump in to major investments. Given time and the budget, I'd get altogether new cabinets in there.

    Benje,

The house was not virtually staged. I took the pics from the Redfin listing.

I think there might be some kind of filter on it that is making it look dollhouse-like. I’ve seen it in other real estate photos.
I would paint the red white and then live with it for awhile - as an above poster said, it’s so overwhelming that it’s hard to think clearly about the whole. I feel like the rest of the kitchen would be less terrible without it.

I have a "wood kitchens" idea book that includes some refreshed older kitchens:

Cool grays and warm woods do nothing for each other - so be very careful on your floor choice.

    Hi Manny,

If you are going for a modern look i would suggest purchasing new cabinet hardware. We here at century are seeing that bow handles and T-Bar pulls look sleek and stylish in modern kitchens. I would check out what Century Hardware has to offer. I would highly recommend the [Modern Geo[(https://www.houzz.com/products/modern-geo-solid-brass-t-bar-satin-rose-gold-192mm-prvw-vr~110537135) collection it's century's newest collection and would look sharp in almost any modern kitchen.

Quartz and new flooring is expensive, and once it's in, you won't want to change the cabinets out. Wait, save your money and do the whole thing at one time. Those doors will never look modern, no matter what color you paint them and the more new, modern-looking stuff that goes in, the more those old-fashioned doors will stick out.

Thanks everyone for the input. Definitely have some things to consider.

Just to clarify, I wasn’t planning on changing the cabinet color just the house paint. I don’t think they look terrible. Just a little too traditional for me. So I was hoping to change a few things to improve it. Maybe I’ll do the house paint, flooring and do the cabinets and countertops down the road at some point. Thanks again everyone.

Sounds smart. If you do the flooring a while before the cabinets, make sure you have extra in case you need to fill in any gaps. You shouldn't need much but it's good if you have a few pieces on hand. Good luck!
