An Idea ------ Blossoms

last modified: 8 years ago

It's too hot, too humid and too wet to cook (in NY).

There are so many squash blossoms in the garden. I remember that you don't have to deep fry squash blossoms. You can use them raw in a salad.

So I made a squash blossom stuffed with goat cheese, tomato, tofu (not mozzarella) salad.

Looks yummy, although I don't care for tofu either {LOL}.

so, what flavor does the tofu take on?

That looks lovely! I love how very red the tips are, rather than just tinged. I also love the idea of the tofu considering the blossoms are stuffed with cheese.

Wow, wow, wow, dcarch -- agree with mamapinky0 -- artwork! That looks absolutely stunning, and I'm AMAZED that you stuffed squash blossoms. I would have ended up with such a huge mess. Really. What do squash blossoms taste like? I'm intrigued.

Certain foods seemed sacrilegious to my childhood pagan self - for whatever reason flowers are on that list. I enjoy tempura day lilies but a bit of that feeling lingers....

Nonetheless your salad is absolutely gorgeous. And I love tofu. I like it in salad with ginger and scallions.

Again and again your plating delights me : ) The colors are surprisingly and wonderfully vibrant for tomatoes, squash blossoms, and tofu! I've also never eaten squash blossoms, nor seen one in person as I've yet to grow it... but I'm assuming it might taste delicately of the squash/zucchini? Yeah, like Cathy said, I'd have made a mess trying to stuff them! I can imagine picking up the blossom stems and biting in, and a burst of goat cheese! They are so vivid - are yours always so colorful?

You've reminded me I do miss tofu, and it can be enjoyed as you've plated, without the need to take on other flavors - the delicacy of it pairs nicely with milder food and I love how you used it with the tomatoes and herb rather than mozzarella. You always make my mouth water with your tomatoes... I remember your seedlings photos, all the labels, and thinking wow, you must have a plethora of wondrous tomatoes and tomato flavors each summer! Lovely plate, and I'm sure it was enjoyable!

    Very nice!

I make fritters w/ my excess blossoms. Chopped up w/ some green onion, flour, eggs and seasoning and fried in olive oil

I think that plate looks lovely - but I still just LOVE fried squash blossoms.

    Thank you everyone.

Don't get me wrong, deep fried blossoms taste good, but uncooked blossom has more that delicate wonderful floral fragrance.

The tofu - interesting that it will take a few seconds before eaters realize that they are not eating mozzarella. I think that is known as "expectation bias".

Tofu is an acquired taste. A good one to have for good health.

Muy bien, Dcarch. Undoubtedly, you're an active member of the 'Eat the Rainbow' movement!

    .

At first glance, I thought the tofu (or, as my son used to refer to it: 'toe food' ) was fresh mozzarella.

I like tofu, but haven't had it in years.

Oh, dcarch, so lovely. I marvel at your creativity and beautiful plating.

You inspire and intimidate me. You do not intend to to do anything but share; and I am most greatful. I love it. I am in inspired awe.

I have a most sleek, sweet, pristine petite "woodchuck-ette" in my yonder yard and garden. Golden chestnut hair and very clean and fastidious. However, I suspect that she is the very critter chomping at my pedestrian zucchini -- both blossom and leaves.

I love zucchini and have no neighbor with an abundance who might offer me some. The farmers market a wants $2/Lb.

I have sprayed both hot chili spray and "bitter yuck". But it is raining. I don't think the woodchuck respects those flavors or qualities enough to quit chomping my squash leaves and blossoms. Very sad . Perhaps she will leave our butternut squash alone?

Thank you Petalique. Inspiration is the opposite of money, the more you share, the more you get.
