What is your garden zone and what are your goals with your landscaping? I would think that more privacy from the neighbors. Are you leaning more toward color or greenery. Any hardscaping planned, such as a deck, patio or walkways? It is nice when plants and shrubs are repeated in a garden.

We already have a deck (see last pic) and below:

We prefer evergreens, but a four season yard is my goal, so flowers every season. Although I have mostly evergreens in the yard, I've planted spring (Amsonia Bluestar) and summer bloomers (hydrangea and coral bells).

Are those pines planted either side of your statue? Hard to tell from the photo.

What a wonderful large yard! Lots of potential. Before you start buying and planting more things....make a list of your wants and needs for your yard. Entertainment space? Play space? Room for your dog to roam? A storage shed? A vegetable garden? Privacy? Prioritize. Then....hire a landscape designer for a consultation (you will pay by the hour). Ask lots of questions. Listen and take notes. Then....develop a plan. A garden isn’t something that happens over night. It takes years to develop and “grow.” Do it in stages. You can pay for others to do things, or you can do it on your own. But look at it as a long term labor of love! Good luck!

This is my favorite back yard landscape on Houzz. I appreciate the landscape architect's use of shrubs and trees to provide privacy and color combined with shaping of the lawn. Given the size of your yard, I would definitely do deeper beds. A landscape architect can prepare a plan that you can implement in stages.

My DIY advice..for what its worth...make a plan, divide it into steps. After the plan is solidified, I'd start with the "bones" of the plan. Say, evergreens, bed outlines, hardscape. The blingy and small stuff goes in later.

Yardvaark(9A), that's a great idea. Someone recommended that I should have larger beds, and your bed line does that. That also gives more room for the evergreen shrubs that will inevitably grow much bigger over time.

The easiest way to lay out beds and get a sense of size and shape is to use your garden hose! And...rather than outline your beds with rocks, I suggest digging a deep edge with a square edged shovel and using mulch to define your beds.
