Odd front entry needs major help and modernization

Water damage is forcing us to redo our front entry way. We are doing some much needed updates to my parent's split level home built in 1978. New windows and paint. This front entry is rotting and dangerous. Part of the stone wall needs to be torn down. I wanted to do something different but have no ideas. I'd really like to modernize it with some wire/cable railings. Not sure what color to use on the deck. The old stairs were narrow at the top and got wider on the way down. Should we extend it? Do the stairs differently? The rock wall will be just under the windows beside the chimney, and to the right of the front door. The part that borders the old porch will be gone. Painting the house in "Pier". Window trim will be the "Favorite Tan". We are going to use the "Acacia Haze" for some of the minor trim pieces and accents. What color should we paint the new porch/back deck? Has anyone worked with the wire cable railings? Expensive? Any ideas on how to make this look more exciting are welcomed!

The color for the siding is SW Pier and it's a brown? And the roof is brown too?

The Pier is a green brown. The Acacia is more of a paler green blue gray. The screen shots are not great. Kinda see it better on an area I started on. The gutter will be painted in Pier too. Thinking of spraying the lights a coppery color.

Very cool house. Is the "pier" color settled? Green-brown?

Are there plans to replace the three windows? If your folks will go with vinyl windows, the color of those should be taken into consideration when selecting siding color. green-brown with white window frames is not a good look.

New gutters and better drainage are in the plans? The stone can be reused.

If you want to redesign the front entry, you can hire an architect after you have gathered ideas. If the residents have mobility issues, this is the time to design easier access to the house.

Much lighter paint on the underside of the soffits would add a contrasting accent and brighten up the porch.

I do not like the Pier color for the body of the house and IMO paint needs to decided after all the rest is planned out which you need some help with . Is the stone by the door going ? If it is staying I would do the Acacia for the main house and white trim , tan trim always seems to just look dirty and I do not see a problem with white trim with eiter color it always has a nice crisp look. IMO that whole front entry area needs to be redone

If you haven't tried it yet, I recommend playing around with the sherwin williams color snap app. It might help you pull a color out of the stone that you like. Also, I've had success using the recommended trim colors the paint companies list. They're worth trying.

Here's what your house looks like using the color snap app and clicking on colors in the stone. When you find a color you like you can then "paint" the house...

It looks like you need to knock off the entire porch area and create a large deck that steps down with wide steps. That needs to be done before the siding I think.

The new windows will have a dark tan frame. The tan under the soffits would look great! We use the garage entrance on the other side of the house, so no worries about mobility issues. We do like the Pier color. So sick of the orangy cedar look the house has always had. Are you thinking lighter would look better, another tone? We wanted a bolder look. The house is so odd, no traditional colors really look right on it. The paint is pealing badly in some areas. We have been doing a ton of scraping and found a primer that bonds to wood like that and the paint goes over it nicely. Window installation will start Monday. Painters will start after windows are in. A family member that is a contractor is doing the work for us. No architect, so just my ideas basically. Bungalows and farm sinks are my style... So this is a challenge!

The stone to the right of the door will stay. We are not working with a huge budget. Fixing the foundation issues under the stone, replacing a large deck in the back, and a ton of custom windows are $$$!

Unfortunately the tan windows are a done deal. There is nothing white in our house. White just seemed like it would stick out like a sore thumb and get so dirty. The fireplace on the other side of that wall is the same stone. I do like the look of the horizontal wood cladding. I tried an urban bronze for the house, but we can't change the roof color so it just didn't look right.

What is the color of the roof? Is it a reddish brown?

Do you have a carpenter rebuilding the wood porch and steps or will a stonemason build a stone porch and steps after rebuilding the wall smaller?

Nice house. Invest in some gutter to help protect your siding in the future. Box around the downspout(s) -- one on both sides of the entry if needed.

Rather than a front porch, build a deck -- the full 6'-8' depth -- with spaces between the boards and a gravel filled drainage ditch beneath them to move the water away from the house. Have the new deck extend from what's left of your old front deck/porch all the way to within a few steps of the right side of the house and end the deck with full width steps.

If you find that the paint you've chosen is not adhering as you might like, consider having your exterior sand blasted or at least pressure washed and/or bleached before even trying to repaint. If you could get rid of all the old paint, you could apply CWF or a "natural" stain; otherwise, a greenish/brownish "natural" color would suit it well.

Please don't pressure wash wood siding unless you like to see splinters flying in the air. As soft and spongey as that is, that is not a good idea. New siding with a factory applied color might be, highly recommended. Had a family next door pressure wash their deck which the previous owners had applied some of that 'great gel stain' tooo...mildewy now, gel stain ed by sap from trees above, etc etc........pressure washer....wallah.....holes in deck floor. Do NOT force water into your wood siding/sub walls/etc. You really might need some consult specialist in this case, but I do not see why painting this would help it for more than a couple of years. New siding, would be the most effective use of dollars and labor, you might check into this and see. Anytime you have a wood of this age, there is just the sense it has served its' purpose. I don't know what people put on homes like this other than wood, but NEW WOOD siding at minimum would seem the best cure for the problems. Have others experienced different results? Curious to hear from others with similar aged homes.
