check myhosta db.. and bazinga.. it does ... as a plantaginea spawn ...

the pebbling looks normal ... puckering ...

i claim no hvx expertise.. but its supposed to be a color bleed ... brown is in a hosta color .... its usually a result of water stress ... i will defer to anyone on this part ...

did you get a flower yet ... its supposedly fragrant ... lol ... when i was hardcore.. i recall a number of butt uglies .... that were named and collected due to oddities .... like pure white flowers ... or random fragrance ... etc ...

took me 10 mins to find my dB .. but i found i had this one back in the day ... but as you note.. it was so uninspiring.. i never took a pic of it... lol ...

Yes it has really white flowers and it has flowered every year. Not much pictures because its ugly ;) Here is one, not so good picture, but there is white flower on left side off SF. I must go tomorrow after work to sniff the flower, LOL.

Didn't know it was ugly when I bought it. It was from local plant store and it's quite funny that they had this kind of hosta. Usually we don't have anything special locally, just few oldies. At that time I had only few hostas and was starting to buy hostas.

two characteristics that are out of the ordinary ...

back in the day.. it was hard to get seedlings with plantaginea as a parent ... and we didnt have all these guacamole etc.. clones .... herb benedict got a few ... sweet Winifred.. holly something or another .... and apparently francis williams got one .. or a hosta friend.. sent her a seedling ... introduced in 1964 .... crikey.. its almost as old as me.. lol ....

regardless of the fact that it is ugly ... lol .. but that isnt why it was an important advancement in hostadom .... in its own time ....

Interesting that Hugo's database doesn't mention fragrance, and the registration flags it as "false" for fragrance. So plantaginea isn't always successful in passing fragrance gene.

Note also that the one listed offspring of Snow Flakes is a plant with odd coloration (Snow Flurry/Flurries). Perhaps that offspring is just amplifying a latent trait in Snow Flakes, with vein [dis]coloration as shown here.

So unless you've had a problem with HVX in the garden before, you can think of this one as "likely" virus-free.

Dteager: unfortunately I had some hvx in my garden. These were my first bought hostas, before I learned hvx, now I know where I won't buy hostas. Also had hvx in Eurohostas hostas although they promised in web shop that they are aware of hvx. So it's possibly to there is still hvx. Do you think, I should get rid of Snow Flakes.

I have learned my lesson with hvx and now I order only from Fransen and Hostaworld.

The more I look at this, the more nervous it makes me. And yet the symptoms don't seem to match any of the scary photos of HVX at the Hosta Library. If you don't like the hosta, and are happy to plant a non-hosta in that spot, then I'd get rid of it this fall.
