Moisture meters

There was a discussion of using moisture meters on the soils forum from a few years ago, but it seemed to be mostly about container plants. I have a fair number of new shrubs planted this year, with more going in this fall. I’ve been hand-watering a couple of times a week, giving the root ball area a good soak. They’re looking good so far in this hot dry weather we’ve had.

It is useful to use one of these meters to determine if the rootball is getting enough water? It’s difficult to get a finger in there. I don’t want to give them too little, and too much is a waste of water and $. In the past I’ve just guessed, with good results, but I’m not on a well anymore. Thanks.
