Problems with my Scotts S2554

I have a late 90s Scotts S2554, same tractor as a Deere G100. It has a Kohler Command 25hp engine. I complete tore down the engine about 2 years ago and it was in amazing condition inside, and installed all new gaskets etc and it has run great since, with the following exception. About this same time last year, I started having an issue where when I run the mower, I can mow just fine for about 10-15 minutes, then the engine starts wildly revving from a near stall to full power, pops and backfires then nearly stalls again. If I idle it down, it will idle fine again, but as soon as I run the power up it does it again. Once this has started I have no choice but to shut it down for awhile. I lived with the problem and limped along through the end of summer last year and shut it down for the winter. This spring when I started it up, problem gone! and it has run perfect all year until last night, and now the issue is back.

To me it sounds like it is running out of fuel, in fact that was the first thing I checked last night was to make sure I didn't forget to fill it. It has a new fuel pump and filter on it, but I'm wondering if I have an issue in the carburetor. A coworked said he thought maybe the float had a pinhole and was filling with gas and then no longer floating. He though maybe sitting all winter without gas in the carb the stuff in the float worked its way out and it ran ok again. I'm planning to have to tear into it this weekend. Any ideas where I should start?
