Zone 4b - sunny location - wanting color!

Pls ignore poor photoshopping and red potted plant by back door.

House is tan with dark brown trim and a navy backdoor.

I love hot pink, purples, blues, chartreuse and yellows. Planted 3 bobo hydrangeas and the blue arrow jupiter already that are show in pic (I photoshopped them to see how they should fit the space with time).

Backyard isn't huge so trying to be careful about plant selection - fall/summer/spring interest would be amazing. Already have royal raindrops crab, standard globe blue spruce, QuickFire hydrangea tree and upright (pyramid) yew in backyard as well as some boxwoods and golden globe arbs.

Put colors in space to see what you suggest and about layout. I am not necessarily tied to these plants though I love them all individually (salvia, coral bells, blue spruce, supertunias)

Driveway is to be done at a later date which is why patio crew put in temp space between (hence white line showing where drive is likely to end up).

What are the dimensions of the space?

“I photoshopped them to see how they should fit the space with time.”

Unfortunately, Photoshop won’t tell you this because the photos of the bushes and of the site, being from different sources, may not be in proportion. For instance, if you take a photo of a 2 year old from 3’ away and an adult from 100’ away, the 2 year old will take up more of the photo, almost filling it, while the adult will only take up a tiny part of her photo, even though the adult is larger in reality. This is why FloralUK is asking about dimensions of the garden. For three Bobos to fit, since they each grow to about 4’, you need about 10’ to give the slightly overlapping hedge look you have in your Photoshopped image. The easiest way to figure out spacing is with graph paper with each box representing 6” or other standard dimension. Then you can draw circles of the expected shrub size on a proportionate garden drawing. Or in a small space, just by knowing the size of the space and the expected size of the shrubs, a bit of multiplying with a calculator will tell you if you have enough room. Bobos: 4’wide x 3 shrubs = 12’ minus a couple feet so that they overlap.

Are all those plants in this one space or are some of them in other parts of the yard? Quickfire hydrangea is a great choice for long season color, but will be relatively large, and you have winter interest with several types of evergreens and the crabapple. Are they placed where you can see them from indoors for winter enjoyment? If you have a plot plan from the city, you can print that larger such as 1”=1’ and use that to help plan for the whole yard.

Yes, I measured for the bobos to overlap. I want the bobos to overlap a bit over our stoop so I won't need a potted plant there (want lantern instead). The widest part (where the bobos are located) is 9.5' and the longest part is 12' (house to steppers).

I know salvias spread and supertunias are annuals so I'll just plant these where there is space. The evergreens (spruce/spreading ground cover) and rock is more what I'm questioning. I fear a globe blue spruce will get to be too big for this space (4-5' wide) but I would like something with similar coloring since we have it across the drive (by the garage in standard form).

You can see all the plants in my backyard from our family room - the plants by the backdoor (in pic above) are the only plants you wouldn't see except for when you walk in/out the backdoor so I'm not worried as much about winter interest here.

All of the plants mentioned that are not in the pic above are the only plants we have so far in our backyard. I'll post separately about that as I'd really like some winter interest/evergreens in that space. That is my next project ;)

bella rose - that sounds like a good combo! Unfortunately I can't copy you as we can't grow those in our zone. Please share a pic when you have it together!

UPDATE: 3 bobos as our foundation plants and the skyrocket juniper in pic were already planted (just did photoshopping so you could see them a bit larger) ;)

Since posting this, we've planted 4 green velvet boxwoods in front of the bobos (tbd if we will keep them mounded or hedge them as they get larger - spaced so both are options). We also planted the Lundeby's dwarf blue spruce (they only grow 2-3"/year and we got a fairly small one) and plan to put in a medium-size rock behind it. In front of the spruce we planted 3 purple coral bells (planted in a triangle around the spruce).

TBD what to do between the boxwoods and spruce/rock. Would love some ideas!
