Need some ideas for the backyard!

We moved in at the end of last year and have been working mostly on the interior of the house. Now that it's summer I've been devoting some time to the front and back yards. My problem now is how to deal with the little retreat we have. It was there when we bought. We are not big fans, but don't have the money now to re-do so we're trying to work with what we have.
The fabric covering the area (really old and falling apart) is a reasonable solution, but would like to some ideas/opinions on how we can improve on it.

I think the best idea it to make this section as a hang out place rather than putting the BBQ and table there. If you are really handy, you can build your own benches not for much. See the picture I have attached. The furnitures are made of pallets. A lot of stores are throwing them away so you can get them for free. You can also look for rattan furnitures. You may find something interesting such outdoor couches and tables. I do not sell them on my website but there are plenty of stores that carry them.

Hi Viet! Thanks for your comment. We thought about using the space as a hangout, but then we won't have a place to sit down and eat when we BBQ and/or just want to have lunch and dinner in the backyard. The BBQ itself, is only there temporarily since we need a bigger one and I will put it on the side of the house (can't see in picture). We have a 51/2 yr old son, and he likes to play in the open area around the space. Thanks!

Casey's link is rattan style furniture (the other alternative I was telling you about). There are a lot of models and sizes in general.

Keep it simple then and just put plants and flower pots. It will be more lively.

I am actually looking for some good ideas for the top, to keep the space cool during the day and give it some style.

yes, but I want something a little more organic and lively. I like the idea of the fabric that's already in place, but want to see what other solutions we could apply.
