It is a fern, but not all ferns grow the same way. This one spreads fairly readily via spores (formed on the thing that looks like clusters of green turning to brown beads). Once the plant has started growing, it develops a thick, tough, well rooted rhizome that gets both longer and stouter annually. It doesn’t make a neat circle of fronds like many ferns. I find it a pest in my garden, but like it in the woods and roadside ditches.

Also, there are many other ferns that have better, longer-lasting fronds for arrangements. Some fern fronds just wilt. If you are in a mild enough region, you can probably grow some of the evergreen ferns, which last a long time in arrangements...like holly fern, autumn fern, Christmas fern and the like.
