I don't plant garlic, but my DH plants it in October.

Good point about the mulch, NHBabs. I forgot to mention that. I put about 6" of straw down and have very few weeds the following spring/summer but garlic grows right up through.

I think the mulch also helps with winter protection to allow warm soil for a longer period for root growth as well as preventing frost heaving in spring.

I just planted a bed of garlic over the past couple days, here in metro-west Boston. This is probably zone 6a now and I've tried to change it in the Houzz profile but it won't stick.

The garlic probably could have gone in earlier, but I had to get over to Mahoney's to buy actual seed garlic (in the past I've just planted stuff from the store). I bought both hardneck and softneck.

Once the bed gets a good rain over the next few days I'm going to put down some wattle type hay for mulch (after removing the netting).

My garlic went in last weekend, later than usual, but it has been raining so much it has been difficult to do much outdoor work.
