Late August yard views

Sharing some sights from the garden beds on Monday. Let's see what everyone else has going on as summer draws to an end (sigh).

Sometimes you have to look a little more closely, like at this Tricyrtis (toad-lily) 'Tojen':

and at this Tricyrtis "Gilt Edge':

And at this aster I can't find the variety for (any help?):

Or to spot this little guy/gal hiding on the Tatarian aster:

Also, these two Liriope muscari (lily turf) 'Big Blue', which I know are pedestrian but I'm happy to see flowering for the first time in this location:

Just a couple more because I can't help myself. First this Pulmonaria (lungwort) that I have a new found love for due to my mostly shade yard, this one is 'Raspberry Splash':

And lastly this new Heliopsis helianthoides (false sunflower) 'Sunstruck' that I hope likes its home and takes off:

Ckerr I love the last two especially!

Wow, that pulmonaria is the nicest I've ever seen this late in the year. It must really love that spot! The toad lilies also look great and sure do have interesting flowers. You really have to see the close up.

    those hosta look familiar....

I meant to add that the aster might be kalimeris?

Love reading about the August plants don't have too many plants here yet as I just moved. It reminds me though that fall is around the corner which in turn reminds me of David5311 of many many moons ago Thread about the fall Garden.

    https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/2766414/some-little-known-plants-for-fall-gardens

I feel very guilty whenever I read that thread that I don't have a very good fall garden but still I enjoy rereading :-)

    Lovely flowers!

Faith, your first grapes - how exciting! How many years have you had the plant?

Great to see these photos. We in the Seattle area have been indoor captives secondary to wildfire smoke. It is supposed to clear today so hopefully will be able to shoot some photos without having to shoot through beige smoke!

I love the Tricyrtis. I have tried to grow it so many times and the slugs from far and wide find them, even this time of year. Will just have to admire yours. Thanks for posting.

Thank you all for your comments and lovely pictures; in no particular order:

katob - I think you nailed it on what I called the aster, it’s actually the false aster Kalimeris mongolica ‘Hortensis’.

faith - Beautiful blooms, thank you for sharing. We love the nasturtiums too, here’s pic of some we have potted:

Gardenho - Love the coreopsis and Veronica mix and yours are going strong into fall. I have a tag for moonbeam but pretty sure it died somewhere along the way. I do have this Zagreb that’s about 2 feet high by 3 feet wide, definitely a favorite that blooms all season (and would more if I’d do the tedious deadheading):

Thanks again, love to see more from everyone.

    Limelight hydrangeas.

Roguchii (spelling?) clematis has been blooming all summer.
A small rose of Sharon, wish I remembered the name.
    Citrina Thunbergi daylily.
    Sherry

Beautiful, Sherry. I really like that Rose of Sharon--how small is small, I've always stayed away from them due to size and reseeding.

Ckerr, it’s supposed to max out at 3-4’. It’s been a slow grower, after about 5 years it’s about 3’ tall. Blooms are about 3” in diameter. I doubt you’ll find it at a big box store, purchased it at my favorite local nursery. I’ve had some Volunteer seedlings, I just pull them out

Very nice, mazerolm. My liatris and astilbe are long gone by now, yours look great. In the first pic it looks like you have spirea blooming too. I guess late August in your Zone 3a is similar to late July in my Zone 5b.

Everyone's garden is so beautiful, neat and tidy. Needless to say I am a totally informal gardener. My gardens are a mix of perennials, grasses, shrubs and annuals. I am a hole gardener. I buy a plant I like and then where ever I can find room to dig a hole I plant it.

There is some symmetry in there somewhere with grasses, spirea, and arborvitaes.

This one is just a mix mash. Actually it hides the pumpkin patch behind it.

CKerr: I love the lungwort and the toad lilies. I also have a mostly shady yard and have been looking for some new plants to add. Thanks for the suggestions. Have you had any trouble with slugs? I’ve read that they can be a problem. If so, how do you handle them? Thanks!

We have some slugs that seem to like the ligularia, hostas, and vegetable garden (especially zuchinni) more than the lungwort and toad lilies. If they become a problem we use the beer in a bowl method--cheapest beer you can find, pour it in a bowl with a steeper side, and they'll climb in to their demise.
