I agree1 930;s and before.....used to be you could date a glass ornament by the metal cap...until I saw a dealer cleaning up the caps from a box of broken ornaments after the good ones had been sold.
My tree has dozens and dozens of old ornaments....and I have a sltle tree that has a bunch of the old cardboard ornaments and some very little old ornaments, including some old clip on birds.
And Martha...I won't be as kind as the rest....I can just say "Dummy!" Seems we have to do that sort of thing once every 10 years to keep us buying loads of stuff we don't really need.

Yeah -- sometimes it works (the stuff is there when we go back) and sometimes it doesn't! But we DO buy more stuff because of that "it won't be here if we come back" mindset. But mostly when I do, it's when I regret not going ahead -- sigh!

I would guess pre war too. I have one old family inherited ornament with a paper or cardboard cap. I assume it was pre or wartime, though glass ornaments were scarce during the war.

The ornaments with the cardboard cap were put out during WW II...and unless the cap has been moved around, those ornaments were plain glass, not coated with mercury to make them Mirror-like. The US did make some glass ornaments....but before the wars both WWI and WWII Germany made the glass ornaments with the mirror finish and the elaborate molds. As a matter of fact, the whole concept of a Christmas tree was German and northern European.

Most do look quite old, similar to ones from my grandma from the 30s & 40s, but a couple might even be 50s...?
