What color dining table?

We have an open living room/dining room area with dark wood floors. Our walls are gray with white moldings, and we plan to have a white wood bookcase/wall unit built in that will span the entire length of the wall that goes from the living room into the dining room. The overall look is polished and modern, not rustic at all. We do not plan to have a rug under our dining table, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what color the table should be. I prefer dark wood, but since the floors are dark, would that be dark wood overkill? All of the gray wood tables that I've seen are too rustic for the look we're trying to achieve. Any suggestions?

Actually, I just wanted to be more accurate- the look we are going for is more transitional/leaning in a modern direction. I really want a wood table, not metal or marble....

Pictures of the space will help. Also, you could consider lighter legs, lighter chairs, lighter table in general if all dark wood... What kind of dark are the floors? Espresso, dark brown, etc? How dark are the walls?

The color scheme is similar to the top pic in Kulrn's post, but the floors are slightly darker, more espresso. Also, we already have dining chairs, the leather Smoke color Lowe chairs from crate and barrel. Sorry I can't post pics of the actual space, we're still in under construction mode... Also, the couch in our living room is chocolate brown leather (marsala sectional fro Raymoore and Flanigan). To give you an idea of the space, it's literally one large rectangular room with white floor moldings, and a white single panel shaker style door that leads to the basement. There are stairs on the left side facing the living room area that are stained the same espresso as our floor, and have a dark gray/ light gray runner with an ogee pattern. The banister is also dark stained, and the other stair accents are painted white. We plan to have a large wall unit built in that will be white. We need a large dining table that will seat at least 8, and expand to 10. Thank you for any suggestions!!

No, we can't return the chairs. The chandelier will be light- zigzag capiz from west elm. Would a rug under the table help? We plan to have an area rug by the couch, so we thought it would be too much rug to have one under the dining table as well. Also, the width of the room is 12'8"-without the wall unit, so would a rug under a large table in that space be overwhelming? If not, what rug would you suggest?

A rug may help. Or have you looked at other style tables?

You think we can put a rug in the living room area, and dining room?

Rugs would be nice. And help define the areas.

Any suggestions for area rugs? We were considering the Nuloom 4'x6' Sherill Rug, Gray for the living room.

To help people help you, here is your chandelier

And the 4 x 6 rug. Hopefully you mean a larger size for your living room. Is gray your favorite color, and do you want to limit the color in your dining room to gray? It sounds like a very somber room.

We have a very colorful piece of art that will be going on the wall above the couch. We also have some blush accents-pillow/throw on the couch. I actually never thought I'd have anything gray in my house, I thought it was a dull color, but after researching different color schemes, I found that gray walls, white moldings/doors and dark wood had a very elegant look. Do you have a different suggestion for the living room rug?

I'd suggest you finish unpacking. It's hard to decorate around the boxes. Then re-post pictures.

Pull the sofa out away from the window wall.
