a recent new home for you? You've added the pale blue just to kitchen? I would continue with paint in the family room. Go for a cool based off white. the mustard yellow is not agreeable. the pale blue with your counter and black/white mosaic does work. Try to get a small bit of molding across top of wall cabinets. then don't do anything. the layout and the island and the higher sitting position has to be dealt with by your family for a while. It's possible with different family room furniture positions you could get a bigger, normal height island with much better seating. the overall layout of kitchen may have some issues not apparent yet. But it might be okay as well. Point is: uncertainty is ahead of you for a bit. the black white mosaic altho unusual, is fine and the blue paint works much better....the more important thing is the island itself and perhaps some changes to make a better island, not just eliminating the mosaic. I might paint the black stools a high gloss red for fun/exuberance ….and go on to the family room walls while settling in.

I’m not a pro, but I would consider covering the island tile with some kind of wood panel treatment (painted to match or contrast with the cabinets), then do a neutral wall paint (for now) that contrasts slightly with the cabinets. After that I would work on an amazing backsplash.

I have a black and white kitchen. I’m doing a carrara marble mosaic backsplash and currently using bm cedar key paint, which is a light greige. It’s not my favorite color, but it makes the kitchen look pretty good. The standout is a pair of short upper cabinets painted black. So, for your kitchen, you could switch a couple of cabinet doors to glass, with or without grids, add lighting, paint the interior backs or mirror them or insert back painted glass, then figure out how to make that island base special. It’s high, so stools might be enough if they contrasted more with the island base background.

I like the blue, but, the tile on that island, really is not attractive. You have a very nice looking kitchen, if not for the in your face tile. I would also like to see moulding on top of your cabinets. It will all come together, it just takes a bit of time.

Tear out the tile and clad the island sides/back. You can color match the paint to the cabs or paint the whole island a different color.

Agree the tile is too in your face busy. Bar stools that contrast might help. Also would like to see a little bit of color or design brought into the backsplash. My favorite color for white cabinets so far is sherwin Williams Ice Cube. It’s just a touch of grey in it.
