my first EE to fall over in it's new pot..now has nice upright stems in the center but the outer ones are flopping..
    the second one has flopped..
tuber coming out..do these need a bigger pot or can I attempt to lower it?..
    the green ones look fine..

Personally I think it's to late in the season to re-pot, other members will have more advice for you

Hi Christine!..you know I dig and store my green EEs..but these 2 black ones were overwintered in pots last winter..was planning to do the same this winter and I don't want to leave this one falling over all winter..I wish I'd realized to plant them deeper originally..

Now I'm thinking about where you are, so you do have time to dig them in deeper, go with your instincts Ann. My Canna looks like she's going to have seeds,I'll keep you posted

in gardening it seems like something less than ideal happens and you need to decide what to do..my options..get a new larger pot in the morning OR divide the plant and use 2 of the burgundy pots like it's in now (I have another one)..scares me a little to take it apart..I think I have seeds coming on the cannas I bought this summer..I'm going to save them..the ones I started from your seeds (way TOO late) are still small..will get some pics and post on my canna thread..

The only EE that I've had that blew over was a Black Magic last yr. I have a pic of it somewhere. It was in the ground not a pot when a storm hit it. I then righted it and secured it with stakes and rope. It did well and bloomed a lot afterwards.

jay..could you see the bulb?..if I'm remembering correctly your black EEs look nice with sturdy stems at the soil surface-no bulb showing..I'm afraid mine are planted too high..I'm glad the wind didn't ruin yours last year..

I saw this in a plant catalogue.."Colocasia tubers work their way upward each year, so every few years, re-bury the tubers to at least 6" deep"..maybe in the ground it takes longer to reach the surface of the soil?..glad to know that it's normal for a tuber to pop out of the soil..I WISH that as soon as I saw a bit of the tuber to replant THEN..my tuber was on it's side and the stems are now curved..I replanted today but it looks sad..the tuber's now buried upright but the stems don't stand up..

I staked it for some support after the move..the stems on the right are fine..this is the THIRD pot this summer..the final move..it's going to live or die in this pot lol..

I saw that same thing written in an on-line catalog. Maybe the same one.

Today I noticed my double Black Magic EE was blown slightly in the opposite direction as the Oct 9, 2017 photo above. This time from a NE wind either last night or today. It/they will need a stake.

jay..been raining for days..I can't do anything!..the EEs seem to be fine..won't know until the rain stops (Mon?) if they're bent, broken etc..

the most recent pic of the first EE that I repotted..my stems are a lot bigger!..the "beat up" leaf WAS perfect but I saw some tufted titmice landing and sitting on it!..

Same here with rain. We're in the middle of a 3 day flood watch & warning followed by almost 3 more days of rain. So until the storm stops I'll just watch the pair list in the NE winds. Here's a pic from a few minutes ago:

You can see that the Caladiums in this planting are going through their end of summer thin-out. The ones in my more shaded & wind-protected planting are not. It's been in the upper 50's ℉ (13.5℃) here since last evening.

I suggest you try staking some indiv leaves (when practical) if the soil is solid enough. Even if the leaves break first like my small Black Magic EE. The plant and the birds are great to have around and that would benefit both.

the rain finally stopped but everything is dripping wet..I haven't been outside yet..my plants look just like yours..droopy and limp looking..I can see quite a few caladium leaves on the way out..our temperatures have dropped too..I do have some stakes on the most recently planted EE..it was probably helpful with all of the rain..I haven't seen the titmice since that one day..I hope that was a rare thing..

I was able to secure the leaning EE later that night. I used a hose around the twine so the twine wouldn't cut into the stems:

After the pic was taken a different storm made it lean the opposite way so I need to fix that too.

This is the one that was smashed flat 2x in a row with 2 separate branches. 1 of the 2 leaf stems didn't heal and is flopping over now. The other one did. Also, one of the leaves that opened while it was cloudy for about a week is almost black.

Left: The mostly healed stems. Right: The single dark leaf:

I don't have any stakes on my EEs now..I did cut some bent stems..they really have grown a lot since I put them outside..my caladiums don't look nice..this time of year depresses me..I love summer and hate to see it end..
