Help with chair!

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi! Advice needed please - we'll be ordering the grey (ash) Barrett sofa from Crate & Barrel and would like some help on chairs that would go with it. Our room is long and narrow, so ideally we are thinking the couch and two chairs on either side. My husband is set on having a comfy reclining chair or at the very least a swivel chair but to me, they're just so big and bulky. Our styles are very different. At this point, I don't even know what color I want them in! Initially we were leaning towards brown leather but I'm afraid it will be too dark. I would like the room (painted greige) to be warm. Any help is appreciated! Photos of couch and room attached.

Edited to add that this is our only real living space so I'd like it to be comfortable, functional and look nice!

Why do you think brown leather would even be a choice. I would do 2 matching chairs with a couple of ottomans if you want to put your feet up the ottomans also make nice extra seating in a pinch. Choose an interesting fabric in a pattern since your space is very neutral

A pair of these recliners would work well for you.

Where is the TV? Opposite the sofa? Let us see that wall. Spanning the opening and blocking the door with the sofa is not really working. New one could float perp to the door, with a pair of chairs opposite it. Put a sofa table behind it if you don't want to see the back from the entry.

There was a brown leather chair next to the couch in the store and it looked REALLY nice so that's why I went that direction.

I don't have a great picture of the wall with the TV. The room is kind of awkward and I think that is the only place the couch can go. The TV will be lowered and so will the mantle.

If I were to move the couch then it would be awkward to watch TV.

If you husband is a large person, let him choose the recliner that fits his size; however, if your husband is not large and/or if you're buying a recliner for yourself, there are ladys' sized recliners that both rock and swivel.

Thanks Suezbell! He's not a large man, he just really wants a recliner. :) I'll look into that!

Thank you, IdaClaire! I appreciate that. :) I think it would look nice!

Are you planning to get a new rug? If so then choose that first then choose a color from the rug for the chairs, drapes, pillows etc.

    Yes! All new everything.

Remove the TV from the fireplace to the large wall at the end, and put it on a credenza 25% wider than the TV. Float the sofa facing TV, perpendicular to and left of the FP. Place two reclining swivel chairs opposite the sofa and aligned more or less with the entry into the kitchen. They can swing around to view TV or to converse with sofa sitters. Use the chart above to get the viewing distance right for the two of you in the recliner swivels. Then you'll want a larger rug so all the seats are on it.

LStin, I love the new sofa and the nice double doors to the backyard. I don't have proper dimensions, but I kind of estimated based on your photos. Here is a layout that would work for you, but you would have to order a smaller sofa. Not as large as the one you have now. Maybe a large love seat.

.......The chairs would have to swivel as someone else suggested. You should allow plenty of egresses.

what's the room in the background of the photo?

Thank you Liz! Do you think it would be weird to have a TV and console on the wall directly next to the kitchen?

Ma in Michigan - it’s a formal living room (currently housing the other half of our sectional) that will be used as a play room until our child is older. :) We just moved in a few weeks ago so our place is bare and empty!

Looking around I feel an outdoorsy vibe - door, metal lighting and table, knit throw... is there any color for ya?

what's wrong idk with tv next to kitchen - is that what you meant...?

L Stin, I don't think it would look weird at all. You would be able to see the tv while you're cooking :-)!

Seems that fabric can be almost color of wood - is this like coffee table, a toasty color?

I really like brown and grey together. We are trying to put the colours together in our great room too. I’ve seen a few lovely camel coloured ones that would look amazing with a grey sofa.

    Thank you for everyones help!

Thanks, liz_fb; that's the arrangement I was describing. It will work well! Depending on the TV viewing chart I posted, I think the rug/sofa/chairs might be able to center on the FP with the coffee table aligned with the firebox opening. I'd want a larger rug than illustrated so it really grounds the seating and the room. If a lot of entertaining that doesn't involve the TV goes on here, a backless settee in the sofa position and the sofa moved to sit where the long yellow rug is would increase the seating and expand the footprint of the room with larger pieces. The 2 swivels for LStin and spouse would be closest to the TV. Pic below just to show the additional seating when a backless settee is added.

I really like your space! I love the combination of gray fabric and brown leather. I think the brown leather brings some warmth (like wood flooring or furniture does). That said, I think you could also select a fabric chair. I would look for something with fairly simple, modern lines in a recliner. Thankfully some of the newer recliners seem to have really nice styling.

pricklypearcactus - if i were to do a fabric, what color would you choose?

I would want some contrast if I went with fabric. There are just so many options with a neutral gray sofa! Just stay away from a nearly the same gray.

Navy might be a sophisticated choice (as long as the fabric doesn't look too denim-esque in person)

If you want to stay very neutral over all, you could go with a dark (charcoal?) gray but you'll definitely need something like pillows and rug to bring some life to the space if you do gray and gray.

White or off-white if your family doesn't spill much?

If you find another recliner you like in fabric, you could look for a print that speaks to you. I like really high contrast prints like bold black and white, etc.

Amazing! Thank you so much!!! Off-white is definitely a no with our family but I'm loving the other fabric colors. :)
