Love it! You could do 4 solid blues or greens w/ something small, bright and variegated in front of them like Rainforest Sunrise, etc.

Awesome! I forgot to mention the pittosporum is variegated so I was looking at maybe some blue hostas.
I have two Halcyon right now, I could always buy more but not sure if they would be too crowded in that area or not? Since they are larger variety.

What direction does the house face?

There are so many beautiful blues! Look at a bunch of them before you go with one.

Hostas should do great there, AND on the other side of the sidewalk. ;-)

I am not sure whether hostas will make much of a statement under your Pittosporum. I think I would like something with more height there that would cover up some of the legginess of the Pittosporum. I think hostas would look great on the other side of the walkway with a nice curving edge to the bed.

how easily will she be able to dig under such ... and how fast will the roots grow into the hosta.. and choke them out??? ... or will the shrubs be adversely affected by the root cutting ...

with other shrubs.. i have found it can be near impossible to dig under them .. one thing for sure.. sharpen your shovel.. and have the hand shears and perhaps a saw ready ...
