My mother's neighbor has a shrubby dogwood (apparently some native species that volunteered in a rotted maple stump). It's getting really big, and is beautiful when it blooms, but every now and then it smells like something died in there. The first time I assumed something really HAD died, but twice in two or three years seems unlikely. This is the second time, while the berries are getting big.


Is this smell normal for certain species of shrubby dogwoods?
