Last piece-kitchen backsplash

We are almost done with our kitchen remodel but I can't for the life of me decide on a tile. I would like something subtle that has some slight color variation/texture (maybe glazed terracotta?) or something in a slightly different pattern (maybe star and cross?).

Cabinets are a pale gray, walls are SW alabaster (trim will be painted out same color). Pulls and lighting will be an antique brass. Floors are covered but are traditional red oak hardwoods. Kitchen is L-shaped which you can't really see in the below picture but this is the area that would be tiled

Pulls for most of kitchen. Recessed pulls will just go on banquette seating drawers (so little kids don't step on them)

    Hutchae84,

Looks fantastic. I just love your cabinets and space, you have done an amazing job. ~boxer

Thanks Claire and Boxer. I'm nervous about doing a backsplash with marble in it and it not matching my marble counter since most seem to be done with a more gray Carrara which does not match. I also don't want to do anything too shiny or sparkly. I really love the look of an older or more worn tile (think English cottage vs fixer upper). I could go with a hand made tile but the lead times quite long.

Boxer-After studying all of my inspo pics I realized I should have gone for an extended marble slab like you. But that ship has sailed.

I’m sorry Hutchae for just posting and not saying anything....your kitchen turned out great! boxerpal ten thousand???? Is that a typo lol

Besides red oak are there any accent colors in the home
  • 8 years ago
We haven't moved in yet so there aren't any accent colors. Since it is a new (to us, actually quite old) house we might need to buy new furniture to fit in the living room.

I gravitate towards neutrals and blues which are in our rugs.

Check out Complete Tile. They make hand made tiles. I used them for my kitchen.

Claire-tgose are really pretty, I like the variation they give in color too which is kind of what In going for, I just worry they might be too small if I go all the way up to the ceiling.

Houss-I really like a lot if them, I have been perusing their site.

My problem is there is too many choices. I really love Cle tile, Fireclay and Tabarka , I wonder if my kitchen leans traditional for them. I'm not sure if my husband will go for the lead time on some of these too.

Beautiful job. I'd go with handmade, in your case-yes the lead time might be couple months(at worst), but it's backsplash..one can live without.

(I think I never saw one until my youth. Not in homes for sure)

I love all the brands you've mentioned..but as much as I madly love Tabarka-I think too rustic for your space..terracotta and all. I'd choose ceramics. Makes more sense with marble somehow too. I need to think in order to explain myself properly, that's just my intuition at the moment talking.

(many patterns are traditional-just of different traditions, You want your pattern to support tradition of your house..when possible

many choices is a problem, yes;) but a nice one to have..comparatively speaking

I am late to the party. I really love the glimpses of the kitchen - and particularly your cabinetry - which you've posted so far and am a fan of many of the tiles which have been mentioned. I would strongly suggest waiting until you can post pictures of your space with counters and floors uncovered, and then soliciting input again. Definitely live with the leadtime! I'll be glad to photoshop some choices if you wish.

We have Fireclay's star and cross in our pantry. One thing which I love about this pattern is that you can use different colors for the stars, crosses and grout.

I've spent way too much time on the Tabarka site over the years, need to go off and visit Cle :)

Hello, I love, love your kitchen!! We are doing a remodel on our kitchen and are only in the planning stages. We have very similar cabinets with Danby marble countertops. I also want the back splash to be quiet and soft. I have had Walker Zanger subway tiles in the past and have loved the quiet elegance of them. My biggest problem is getting them to blend with the marble countertops. I have read people on these forums who are sick of subway tile, however, I love the quiet elegance of the look and hope that with a traditional kitchen, never go out of style.

It's always amazing to me when someone asks AFTER they install the countertop as to what fits with the countertop as backsplash ..., to me one should think about it before ...that said , your kitchen is amazing and I love what you have done so far and your countertop . You could do the same marble on your backsplash walls and if the color varies a little just put a one inch black marble border in between ...with the help of the installer ...and marble place ..you will come very close to the already used marble
I think the same material would look better in your kitchen than adding tiles to this stunning countertop ...
Besides ..look at the suggestions above . Many have really great looking backsplashes ...but, ..it's ALL you see ...when looking at the kitchens and the countertops are sort of drowned out by them ...! If you a thinking of adding a kitchen island you can use the same cut of the marble for backsplash and the new kitchen island ...countertop .....just thinking out loud .

I understand why backsplash is an issue AFTER the countertop is picked out. We can't pick our our tile until we pick out our exact slabs for countertops and then get a sample to go pick out the tile.

Hutchae84 - is there a certain look you’re going for? Something soft but sparkly? Modern, geometric? Or do you want a showstopper, dramatic and colourful? Or conservative and on budget? I’m also in a kitchen Reno and we did a kitchen banquette as well. Loving your kitchen! (We are still at the drywall phase). Good luck with your choices!

I would suggest getting several samples and seeing them in your space. These came to mind first. Fireclay has 5 for $5. I think I had about 20 samples, You can probably go so many directions, and you'll get lots of suggestions here!

OldBat-I am leaning heavily towards the star and cross. I have a few colors samples I am getting ready to order from Fireclay. I really like it in your space!

Silvia-I and I think a lot of others wait to pick out tile or a backsplash till after they can see all of the elements in our space and then bring in tile to make sure it goes.
Emily-Thanks! I want something subtle but that also still adds some texture or slight color variation to the kitchen. Even though the kitchen is new, I like things to feel a bit "old". My mom keeps pushing me to go bold and colorful and as much as I love color, I am nervous I would get tired of it after a year.
kulrn-I love a lot of those, specifically #1,2,4,5-what are they?
Vevmom-Thank you! I do keep going back to a good subway tile, I know it would work and look great. I went to Ann Sacks yesterday to pick out some (more) samples and they said they are doing a long skinny tile to break away as the new subway tile. I picked some up but I still think the long and skinny don't look good in a brick pattern and feel more modern to me. I do love the sweetness of a smaller 2x4 subway though.

Thanks Kulrn. I have a sample of the Cle zellige and I think I have a sample of the last one you have a sample of, is it a glazed brick tile? it looked to warm next to my counters in person.

Terra cotta is too thick and generally too casual to go in your beautiful new kitchen. Look more closely at matte glass, bright glass, simple solid subway (several different sizes and patterns to choose from), penny rounds.....something more attuned to your counters. I always suggest a backsplash which matches exactly one of the lighter colors in the counter material it will live next to. The other way I have gone in my own kitchen is to use the counter material as the backsplash too, although when you get involved with granite, you must have a good fabricator who will match the veins of the backsplash to the movement on the counter...something I learned the hard way the first time I used the same granite for both counter and backsplash.
I have narrowed down some choices and would appreciate opinions. None of these are very "exciting" but I think they will go nicely in the space. My husband said no to the star and cross unfortunately, so we are staying subtle.

Ann sacks archilla tile in either 4x4 or 3x12. Some if these are a different maker but similar movement. I can't decide on size or gloss or matte for these.
honeycomb or Favo in white or slight off white. I'm also unsure if I would do matte or gloss. Or I could go sharper with Pickett style.
I also still like these 4x4 zellige tiles. I wonder if I could do a brick lay on them though vs stacked? I'm also unsure how my husband feels on this choice (he likes the above two).

printesa-thats a really pretty kitchen. I noticed this one and quite a few others I have liked, have a very simple shirt continuation of their countertop as a backsplash.

Here is another that reminds me of my cabinets and hardware finish. it has something similar to a 4x4, might be a 4x5?

Printesa-thats I love that tile. if only since had more of a contemporary kitchen. They have so many great kitchens.

Thanks! Mine is anything but contemporary. Kind of farmhouse if anything! If you need any more photos to compare, let me know and I’ll put them up, but I think you’ve got this! I can get you the name as well if you like. Cheers!

Thanks Lauren, yes, what is it?

The contemporary comment was for the Cle tile in printesa's comment.

i found that your kitchen is similar with one of my customer. i suggest that u can choose white pearl tiles or some beach style tiles to decor your bachsplash. here are some shows for your reference.
