Outlet bedding.

last modified: 8 years ago

I'm considering a ticking quilt (navy Wheaton) from Pottery Barn and I saw it at the outlet last month for $55 for a queen. I passed because I didn't have a full concrete plan for the room. In a few weeks I'll be heading back that way and might get it. The price is better than online. Last I looked it was $119 on sale. I've also been hesitant because I'm not sure how I feel about the button closure. The look and function of them. I've never had a duvet because it always sounded like such a pain.

1. I believe I read that items from the outlet are nonreturnable. Are the products there less quality? Could I end up with a queen duvet that is a strange size?

2. In general, how's the bedding quality from PB? I've always really liked the look of their pick-stitch quilt but stayed away because it just looked like if you get a pull it would be the beginning of the end for the quilt.

In the past I've been picky about what I've bought from them because they don't allow reviews on their site. Boo.

Anything else you care to add about duvets?

Thanks!

I’m not a big fan of duvets, and have never had much luck with them having that pristine, puffy, comfy look. I do have 2 on a set of twin beds at our lake place because I got them dirt cheap online at the outlet of Pine Hill, but I only have to straighten them out after occasional grandkid visits. You would probably have the same with the duvet in a guest room. I own, and have owned, many pick stitch PB quilts, and have never had an issue, though my dogs don’t get on the beds. I have always loved PB quality for bed and bath, and their sizes are generous. I wasn’t as happy with their classic white duvet cover, which, though good quality, wrinkled waaay too easily.

I am not a fan of duvets...having said that, I just ordered one for my new king size bed for fall and hoping that somehow it will magically work better than previous experiences with my old queen bed. I just feel like they're messy and bunchy, but I love my Garnet Hill linen Eileen Fisher sheets and they had the same color (perfect with my rug) which is now discontinued at a great discount over the weekend.

To address your real question, I've been happy with PB bedding. I've had PB sheets, have a PB quilt on my bed at our beach house, DD has PB Teen bedding, etc... all good quality IMO. I have never been to a PB outlet so I don't know if the quality is the same or not.

I have several PB quilts, some from the outlet. The outlet quilts have all seemed first quality and I have run into no wonky size issues. I have a couple of duvet covers that I really like the quality of, and one I do not (it's rough). I no longer use duvet covers, either, because they're hard to make look good on the bed. I really like the linen diamond quilt and washed cotton quilt - they're soft, and wash and wear well. I think right now all the outlet bedding is 40% off.

I’ll be back. Run by quick posting ...

Wanted to ask also does anyone know where I could purchase a traditional navy ticking stripe quilt/coverlet? I haven’t found one. Serena & Lily had a nice looking one but by the time I found it was discontinued. Not being able to find one was why I went on to duvet searching.

I I too have had several of the pick stitch quilts and at least one regular quilt, it might have been matelesse, I don’t recall. I have a duvet now in a spare bedroom, folded at the end of the bed, and it’s fine, but doesn’t get much use. Grandkids and an occasional out of town visitor. I have a quilt under it, and an extra blanket handy if it’s cold, so the duvet gets removed and all I usually have to wash is the quilt.

So can’t really tell you how it would be for a lot of day to day use. I don’t usually care for all the bedding you have to fidddle with so there is that.

Don't do it!!! Unless you don't mind stripes that don't stay straight. The puffier the duvet, the harder to keep ticking straight. (mine ended up going to a charity store after about 3 weeks.)

eta: Look at Birch Lane's 'Dillon'. Not exactly ticking but close

I loved my duvets...when things got hectic, I would also use a flat sheet underneath (easier to wash)

But a quality, fluffy, down duvet cannot be beat for comfort.

While I think it is true that outlet centers primarily sell goods specifically made for the outlet (and in general of a lesser quality) some of them also have first quality goods that have been discontinued or returns. Can you call and ask?

I’m mobile so will be short. Will try to return with more later. You absolutely can return items to the outlet! If they are seconds, they are labeled.

^^Good to know. I would absolutely prefer a "second" (usually the standards are pretty high and perfectly okay for me) than a lesser one made just for the outlet...

PB does have a quilt with ticking stripe on the back and they consider it reversible. https://www.potterybarn.com/products/luisa-reversible-quilt-sham/?pkey=e%7Cluisa%7C2%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C48%7C%7C2&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH

Both PB and PB Outlet have a price system where items priced at XX.99 (or maybe it's XX.98) - that are not returnable. I would ask before you buy, just in case.

I love duvets, if that means the sorta puffy white thing on my bed. Mine is down alternative (Macy's) and lightweight because I live in California and hate anything heavy.

Anyway, I have a couple of PB duvet covers and I love them. In fact, I'd kill to find another Spring Sparrow cover, which seems to have been discontinued. I've had mine for years and it's finally showing its age. Very good quality. I don't mind the buttons on the end because my bed has a foot and they're hidden behind it.

If you get a summer weight duvet, the "pouf" is minimal. Although I prefer the flatter look of a coverlet, I love the lightweight warmth of my Downia summer weight duvet insert and cover. Plus, I don't have to take the duvet/cover off at night during the winter like I do the coverlet during the late spring/summer/fall.

I have a PB cotton duvet cover that I bought several years ago on sale, and I've been very impressed with the quality. It's a nice tightly woven cotton, almost like percale. That said, I've had a love/hate relationship with duvet covers until I found these magnet duvet clips I've now got duvet covers on all the beds, and bought DD two sets for college. Much easier than washing bulky comforters!

The pins are a great idea...but my duvet covers had ties in the inside corner...the duvets had a piece of twill sewn diagonally onto the corners to tie the ties to.

I don't mind the buttons and you can button them so that they're on the inside (just fold in the bottoms of both sides and button them so they're hidden)...

Quick stop back-- I am leaving town tomorrow for my surgery.

I have a number of PB quilts and duvets-- as does my sister. I love them and honestly there are only a few places I'll buy duvets or quilts anymore. I have a few items from the outlet and I've only ever seen/purchased items that are also listed in the stores-- maybe a season or two before. Not saying they don't have any "made for outlet" items but that's not the norm.

I have returned a bazillion things to the outlet-- they may not allow returns of things like sofas but I have returned curtains, holiday decorations and bedding. What you can't do is return a PB item to the outlet or visa versa.

    Good luck

(Oh.. and I love duvets! I use them year round-- though I do sometimes switch to a quilt in that brief time between heating and a/c weather )

Dee – Thanks for the info. on their bedding. Wrinkles concern me. I couldn’t live with linen. While at the PB outlet I saw a bedding set they put together and it looked absolutely terrible. I mean it stopped me in my tracks. Not only did the colors look off (the yellow ivory/cream color just looked dirty with what they paired it with) it was all rumpled and just terrible looking.

Sue – I remember you saying you didn’t like duvets. You’ll have to update me and let me know if this one works for you! What made you change your mind? Pattern?

Bluebell -Thanks for the feedback. I think I do like the diamond linen bedding. Believe I saw it on Savvysouthernstyle’s blog before.

Outside – Thanks for the quilt feedback!

Haha Maddie! Ahhh I didn’t think about crooked stripes. It doesn’t bother me online in photos but that doesn’t mean it won’t IRL. Thanks for the heads up on the Birch Lane quilt. That’s pretty. I’ve had my heart set on a smaller ticking stripe fabric for about a year but needed more color so I just waited. Finally found this fabric and am going to use it for either Euros or shams. I was debating if I wanted to get ticking stripe pillows and if so, which ones.

Fabric with the PB Wheaton Duvet.

Plan was to use a white coverlet, ticking stripe duvet at bottom, the fabric, and one more accent fabric.

    Other fabrics I like.

    The stripe.

And this color of the long dots.

I like the idea of a yellow/gold pillow perhaps too. The accent fabrics don't have to be square in shape. I like longer lumbars.

I then need to coordinate the bathroom. All keeping in mind at Christmas I plan to still use the tartan and houndstooth plaid pillows with red coverlet that I currently have on my bed. I still like those pieces but I don’t want to look at it in summer anymore. I was planning to start a post sometime about all that but feel free to add fabric combo suggestions.

I plan to use a yellow daffodil painting in the room and green majolica + other art. Have an iron bed.

Party – I did hear about Ikea bedding being nice. I have some of their curtains and like them. I really considered the buffalo check bedding they had but never pulled the trigger. The color just wasn’t quite what I wanted. The last time I looked everything on the site was gray.

Penny – Now you made that sound so comfy!

Marie – Good idea to call.

Funky – Good to know! I thought I saw a sign saying you couldn’t but maybe that was something specific. I just realized I’ll be down there again about a week apart so that would work out well. I’m wondering if they’ll even have any left.

Bluebell – Ohhh. Then maybe that’s what I saw. Since the bedding was under $60 it would fall into that category. Thanks for the link. I did see they had some with ticking on one side but I wasn’t wild about the print. I think it was them that also had one with sherpa on the backside. I decided to pass because I wanted to use it for a warmer weather look and didn’t know how long the underside would stay nice looking.

Bunny – Thanks for the feedback on the quality!

Delilah – I wondered if maybe I should forget the duvet because I want to use this for warmer months. More food for thought.

Teeda – Those are great! Thanks!!

Penny – Ah, that’s a good idea too! Thank you!

I have duvets but no covers. Covers annoy me. I like puffiness but I need it controlled, lol. My beds, bottom sheet, top sheet, duvet (white), quilt, bed scarf. Duvet and quilt folded in thirds. Plenty of pillows. Duvets are the way that Europeans go, all the time. I just never liked the covers.

Perhaps the terminology is confusing me? It's my understanding that a bedspread is thinner and covers the pillows and reaches the floor. A comforter is shorter and so it usually needs a skirt, is puffy, and sits under the pillows. A duvet is usually down and has a cover that's like a pocket, that they don't use a top sheet with. A quilt is thin and small and can either be used alone or folded at the end of the bed as an "extra" cover.

    Is this my own mixup?

FWIW, and apropos of nothing in particular, I have been using duvet covers as bedspreads for several years now. Since I cannot find any bedspreads or coverlets I like, and it's too hot here most of the time for a duvet or quilt, I just use the empty duvet cover ( and matching pillow covers) over a single sheet, and add a blanket or 2, when it gets cold.

I prefer contemporary, simple patterns and colors and found the designs & fabric I liked at Penneys and Target. Target has some very nice cotton and linen bedding for very reasonable prices.
