I'm suggesting you scoot the sectional to the right as well. You'll need to take out the two armchairs that are presently near the sectional. Angle the remaining armchairs that are flanking the fireplace.

I can't sketch it out. You'll have to use your imagination. But basically a layout like this.

I wouldn't worry about lining up the end of the sofa with the railing. How much space is there to walk between the back of the sofa and the stair?

I like what benjesbride shows above. Your other two chairs and a game table could sit behind the one wing of the sectional by the window to fill in that space once you move things toward the center of the room.

When decorating living rooms or family rooms, you have to create the furniture configuration around where the TV is going to go because there is usually only one place it CAN go. In your case, I think the TV can only go over the fireplace (it cannot be centered on the long blank wall in between those two spaces). So I would flip flop the spaces .... I would make the fireplace area the "family room" with the sectional couch and the TV. And I would create the "living room" in the opposite space (where you have your sectional now). Then in terms of what to put on that long wall, I would get two matching pieces of console type furniture and hang corresponding art work over each one.

I think the TV should probably go on the kitchen wall. This is a nice, open layout, but the downside is that I think if you enjoy watching TV you'll probably feel like you need a much much bigger one sitting at least 20 feet from it. Also, two large sofas instead of your sectional will probably be more proportionate.

I'd probably treat the area in the corner created by the stairs like a game room/ library. Bookshelves, window seat, table, chairs.
